Tasting Summary

These comments are the opinion of the individual reviewer and represent what they thought of the beer on a particular day in a particular pub. If a review is less favourable, it may be because the beer suffered somewhere in the supply chain between them and the brewery.

Martin the MildmanGood07 Dec 2010 Quite bitter with a definite hop presence but also some toffee maltiness. My score 15/20.

WittendenExcellent22 Aug 2010 It was raining, sales were slack:what better than a warming rich glass of what could become my favourite old ale. Roll on winter!

BlairExcellent10 Oct 2009 Really smooth ale, chocolatey with a bit of fruity. Can't detect any chestnut, but a lovely beer nonetheless.
BlairGood13 Feb 2009 Dark and relatively thin in the mouth. A little smoky with some chestnuts and malt. Good beer, but I was mildly disappointed if I'm honest.
BlairGood05 Jun 2008 A little cold so the flavours weren't as pronounced as I'd like. Still a nice pint though.
BlairGood04 Jun 2008 Very pleasant with s strong roasted malt flavour. Good stuff.

BlairGood06 Mar 2009 Once again, a good beer but disappointing considering how good Dark Star can be. Little roasted malt with some chestnuts and toffee.
DubbelGood06 Mar 2009 A restrained dark ale with some roasted bitterness. Preferable to the Best for me though.

IanGood27 Feb 2009 Deep, deep ruby. Another in the run of dark ales that I’ve had. It’s very good, rather good smoothness. Aroma is of dark malts, not over dominated by anything, some dark fruits. Bit of a sting on the finish. Some Turkish Delight with the choc. Bit of lasting sourness. Good

IanGood27 Nov 2007 Deep ruby with thin beige head. Slightly sour dark fruity aroma. Nice liquorice and choc finish. Decent old ale. Choccy malty old ale.

IanGood04 May 2007 Deep ruby colour with lasting beige head. Choccy aroma. Not overly sour, bit grainy, quite dry, lovely flavour, some charcoal towards end. Not really an old ale, more a strong mild. Nice though. Little bit of smoked ham aroma pointed out by Duff, but I didn’t get any sourness on finish.
