These comments are the opinion of the individual reviewer and represent what they thought of the beer on a particular day in a particular pub. If a review is less favourable, it may be because the beer suffered somewhere in the supply chain between them and the brewery.

DubbelGood30 Apr 2009 Smells like a herb garden. A solid porter well spiced and very drinkable. I still think the coriander works better with the lighter Umbel Ale though.

IanExcellent17 Nov 2007 In brilliant condition, this slipped down perfectly. Good balance of dark malts, great mouthfeel and that hint of spice on the end from the coriander.

AndrewExceptional24 Jun 2006 Haven't seen this beer for about 4 years so it was a real treat to see it on. Jet black beer with a creamy head. It smelt peppery and had a sharp perppery corriander taste with a creamy underlying texture.

St Albans Beer Festival 2005, St Albans, Hertfordshire

IanExcellent01 Oct 2005 Dark ruby colour with good spicey caramel and smooth in the mouth. Really quite like it, but not a lot of coriander, definite spicey edge with a bit of bacon?

Nethergate (was Nethergate Growler for a while then name reverted) Umbel Magna

5.00% ABV.

The addition of coriander to the Old Growler wort completes the original 1750s recipe for this distinctive dark beer. The powerful spiciness only adds to this porter's appeal..

We have tried this beer 7 times.

We have given this beer an average score of Excellent.
