20 Sep 2016 (Philip Pirrip)
Late evening visit prompted by this site's scribe, the Venerable Harris, and his recent visit. A pub I went off when its prices became unreasonable - they seem more London normal these days or I have become more tolerant!
BeerABVScoreNotes
Adnams - Cashmere IPA4.70ExcellentNot sure what I'd get with lemon, gooseberry and coconut mentioned on the pump clip. In fact a refreshing subtle blend, no way in my hated lemon juice category at all

In theory just a pit-stop after a train journey from Hastings to London Bridge, but it was so unusual to find this pub quiet that it was a pleasure to linger for a while.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Elland - South Sea Pale4.10ExcellentGreat stuff – golden and hoppy, with orange flavours.
Loddon - P.O.T.U.S.4.70GoodQuite a full-bodied, Golden Ale.

Start of the evening peak and very busy indeed. In addition to the beers that I have listed there was something called Market Porter Cornish IPA.

Packed-out venue for pre-Christmas drinks with Robert from Horley and Dave from Peterborough. Luckily they had got there early and bagged a table in the back room. I did not note the wide range of cask beers available.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Empire - Twisted Melon Blonde4.10ExcellentGolden. Full-bodied and well-rounded and a touch sweet. Lemony/fruity hop flavours and coconut.
Beartown (latterly part of Manning Brewers) - Pale Zesty Bear4.40GoodUnsurprisingly, given its name, this turned out to be pale and zesty (and rather hazy).
Dawkins - Resolution IPA5.30GoodAmber/brown in colour. A strong Bitter – not really a full-blown IPA in my book (but what do I know?). Not at all bad.
03 Jun 2015 (Stephen Harris)
Good weather means the large crowds are mostly located outside, and Wednesday night is biker night around here, so there are lots of gleaming machines to admire.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Marston's - Single Hop: Belma4.00GoodNice hoppy beer. Unfamiliar hop tastes.
Rudgate - Brew No. 16 Stars & Stripes5.20GoodAmber-coloured. US hops. Assertive malt. Nice.
G2 - Vela Blonde4.20PoorPale gold. I didn’t like this much – odd, clashing tastes. May have been suffering an infection.

Early Sunday evening visit on way home from Hastings. One of the more relaxed times to visit this notoriously crowded pub.
BeerABVScoreNotes
York (now brewed by and at Black Sheep) - Terra Nova3.80GoodBrown, full-bodied, Best Bitter.
Langham - Christmas Cracker (2014)4.80GoodQuite heavily-spiced, brown beer. The recipe for this beer varies from year to year. I was detecting lots of cinnamon and maybe some ginger, but, fortunately, no cloves (which are the work of the Devil).

The pub is found in Southwark, Central London, SE1 9AA.

Famous pub opposite Borough Market in Stoney Street. Central bar has many beers which change on a regular basis and are mostly from UK micros. Can be extremely busy. Refurbishment some time ago and now there is one main room with a side area with seating as well. Many customers use the pavement outside to stand and enjoy their drinks. Really a must for anyone taking in London pubs. Sports 12 handpumps with 6 in each of the 2 distinct bar serving areas plus a further 4 for cider dispense at the far rear. Upstairs restaurant bar area too, mainly for lunchtime use. In 2019 the real ale choice was drastically reduced to 4 and the cider was withdrawn. Downstairs toilets. Card payment only, cash not accepted here.

We have visited this pub 282 times, seen 813 different beers and tried 647 of them.
