It’s been a lovely day to be afoot in London and I have been exploring all over the place. It’s amazing though how many of these fairly random Sunday walks somehow seem to end up here.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Chocolate Stout4.80ExcellentActually, maybe not all the beers here are hoppy. This one is silky smooth and chocolatey and sweet.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - 1/2 IPA3.00ExcellentFresh from the tank, this beer has an almost alarming, cloudy yellow colour. It is sharply hoppy.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Ruby Red Dinner Ale 5.00GoodA hoppy (they all are here), US-style Red.

Great beer and food here. Eight tank beers available. A boffin was telling me that the beer dispense technology here is pretty much identical to that used by the Zero Degrees chain.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - IPA No. 2 (West Coast Special) 6.90ExcellentGorgeous.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Raspberry Ripple Ice Cream Pale Ale 5.50ExcellentAmber in colour. Raspberry and hops harmony with a creamy background taste. A very clever beer.
Howling Hops (Former brewery at Cock Tavern) - Burton Ale c.1924 5.40GoodA cloudy golden colour. Not like any Burton Ale I have ever drunk elsewhere.
05 Aug 2016 (Stephen Harris)
I ate in here this-evening for the first time and was not surprised to discover that the food is really good and tasty. All ten tanks were in use.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Uto – Double Black IPA 9.30ExceptionalA collaboration beer with Verdant Brewery. I must be in paradise, a 9.3% Black IPA.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - American Brown4.70ExcellentA murky brown beer, well-hopped with Citra, Mosaic, Amarillo and Simcoe.
23 Jul 2016 (Stephen Harris)
I came here after enjoying an afternoon watching athletics at the Olympic Stadium. Lots of other people had the same idea, so for a while it was very busy at the bar. About 7 beers available.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - IPA No. 2 (West Coast Special) 6.90ExcellentAnother pale hop bomb, this time with Mosaic, Columbus, Amarillo and Simcoe in the mix.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Aussie Pale5.20Not TriedA golden beer, well-hopped with Summer and Ella hops. Strength given today as 5.5%.
10 Jul 2016 (Stephen Harris)
Mid to late-evening to watch the Euro 2016 final. Although a very large screen had been erected, disappointingly the signal was coming over the internet rather than a standard TV signal. This meant a somewhat odd picture (the players all looked like Kryten out of Red Dwarf) and occasional loss of picture. The bar was busy, with the majority of support being for France. I also drank an IPA but did not record its details.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Pale XX No. 25.10ExcellentA new recipe of the Pale XX, with Citra, Motueka, Mosaic and Nelson Sauvin – giving a lusciously hop-filled beer.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Cog Zilla – Pale Riding Ale 4.50ExcellentNo surprise to find this beer is pale and hoppy.
26 May 2016 (Stephen Harris)
A brief, late stop on the way home from Hackney.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Black XX No. 1 5.50ExcellentNice to see this yummy beer available again.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - American Brown4.70ExcellentA dark, murky brown colour. Well carbonated. My second, lovely, hoppy Brown Ale of the evening.
15 May 2016 (Stephen Harris)
Standing room only in here on Sunday evening.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - American Brown4.70ExcellentA murky brown colour. Sticky malt and lots of hops.

Here until well after my usual bedtime. Excellent DJ playing singalong, dance in the aisles, 60s and 70s music. A great night out.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Pale XX No. 15.00Excellent
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - IPA No. 2 (West Coast Special) 6.90ExcellentA whopper.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Vanilla Sundae IPA 6.90ExcellentMy notetaking suffered somewhat tonight, but I marked this as ‘excellent’.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Luger4.60AcceptableA Pils-type Lager, hopped with galaxy. Like the galaxy, but something about the Pils-style leaves me cold. Probably just the name and the association of that name with horrors brewed under that name elsewhere in England.
14 Apr 2016 (Stephen Harris)
Unexpectedly quiet in here in the early evening. Almost empty in fact. Still only four beers to choose from.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Pale XX No. 15.00ExcellentVery lush indeed.
09 Apr 2016 (Stephen Harris)
Early Saturday evening and it is heaving in here – no chance of a seat inside and a bit chilly outside. It has obviously been busy all day, as only four beers (usually ten) are available from the tanks.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Pale XX No. 15.00ExcellentVery lush.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Amber Dexter with Coriander 4.80GoodAn amber-coloured beer with a good hop presence from Citra, Ella, Mosaic and Amarillo, plus a gently spiciness.

The pub is found in Hackney, Greater London, E9 5EN.

The Howling Hops Brewery was established in July 2012 in the cellar of the Cock Tavern at Hackney Central. Very cramped conditions limited output and the varied range of beers could generally only be found in the pub. June 2015 saw the opening of a substantially larger brewery in Queens Yard, Hackney Wick and the associated, large Taproom. This occupies a former industrial premises, with the brewery itself at one end and a large space occupied by trestle tables at the other. Outside seating is also available and there is also a kitchen and a café-style counter. Uniquely in London at present, all the beers are poured directly from the conditioning tanks. Nearly as unusually, beers are only sold in two-third pint measures. The brewery stands almost next door to Crate Brewery.

We have visited this pub 30 times, seen 40 different beers and tried 38 of them.
