This is the third, or maybe fourth, time I have come here for an East London & City CAMRA Pub of the Year award presentation. Congratulations to Scotty and Kath. I couldn’t stay long actually and left after the speeches but before the buffet. It is typical of Scotty’s generosity that he gave me a boxed 2013 Fullers Vintage Ale bottle to take home with me.

Busy with GBBF volunteers downstairs and a meeting of the Society for the Preservation of Beers from the Wood upstairs. I was pleased to see that the pub is still doing good value toasties.

Luck was in as a table was vacated in the front room just as we arrived. When I congratulated Scotty for offering a choice between two milds, he said these were the 24th and 25th different milds he had sold in May so far.

On a warm evening, most customers were outside, leaving seats available in the back bar. Here was a unsteady old soak, propping up the bar, sluring his words and telling each new arrival, loudly, that he had “had a magnificent lunch”; this at 6:30pm.

The pub is found in Holborn, Central London, EC1N 6SJ.
Located in Ely Court in Ely Place just off Hatton Garden. Old fashioned wood panelled pub straight out of Elizabethan times (built in 1546) tucked down a side alley offering no nonsense beer and plain simple food with no frills. The pub is technically in Cambridgeshire (Ely being in Cambridgeshire) and the licensees used to have to go there for their licence. Regular Good Beer Guide entry.
