Visits Details

09 Oct 2010 (Alenomore)
My reason for visiting Southampton today, another new CAMRA beer festival! This one, sort of a replacement for the defunct and nearby Eastleigh b/f. Advance tickets only and all sessions were sold out. A good crowd turned out, the ales were in fine form and everyone had a good time, especially those playing conkers! (No Elf & Safety rules down here with bits of conkers flying everywhere!). Stayed here for the complete session and made no time to visit nearby St Denys for two top gbg's their. Will have to retrun? Recommended.

Langham - LSD (Langham Special Draught)5.20ExcellentFirst of the session and very good too. Deep and Dark.
Three Castles - Autumn Daze4.40ExcellentA new ale, and fairly hoppy too.
Hogs Back - Autumn Seer4.80GoodHere it was badged as Autumn Ale and described as Porter: Golden Ale brewed with fresh new season hops; subtle hints of banana followed by a bitter sweet aftertaste. Definitely not Porter then!

The pub is found in Woolston, Hampshire, SO19 7GZ.

A suburb just outside the City, Pear Tree Church Hall is the venue for this first CAMRA beer festival. Little more than 5 minutes walk from Woolston Station (Southampton-Portsmouth local line)or a bus from the City centre. A small and perfectly formed beer festival, originally a gathering of people from the Church Hall that got together for there own beer fest, now, with the help of South Hants CAMRA, it has gone "legit". 20 ales on stillage plus some decent Cider and a selection of German and Belgium bottles. Good value food served. Tokens for beer and the £2 entrance ticket price included a festival pint glass. All ales were £2.40-£2.80 per pint. Live music for the Friday/Saturday evening sessions. A pub style quiz was held on the Saturday afternoon session, and, games of conkers amongst groups of drinkers were being played. All monies raised from these activities going to the local charity, Hearing Dogs for the Deaf.

We have visited this pub once, seen 20 different beers and tried 10 of them.
