Late afternoon and really nice atmoshere. I had originally planned to have one of Antic's excellent sausage rolls but I could not resist the Percy Ingle shop on the way here so was no longer hungry. Left a few copies of Marsh Mash on the bar and sat down and enjoyed listening to the sound of Bob Dylan.

I seem to have an uncanny knack of going in here on a Monday evening and expecting it to be quiet but discovering it is quiz night and busy. I appeared to be the only person in the room who knew that ‘Machine Head’ and ‘Burn’ were albums by “70s Rock Band” Deep Purple.
Brew York - X-Panda: Centennial, Ekuanot & Simcoe 4.50ExcellentAn amber-coloured ‘Session IPA’. Very heavily hopped. Leafy.
Volden - Session Ale3.80AcceptableA hazy amber colour. Heavily malty, to an extent that I did not enjoy it much – not sure if this was just the contrast with the beer that went before.

East London (ELB) - Nightwatchman4.50GoodA dark Bitter with plenty of chocolate malt.
Franklins - English Garden3.80GoodAn amber-coloured Bitter with reasonable hop content.

Our CAMRA Crawl numbers are boosted to around 15 in here and we take over one corner. Always a nice pub to visit. I head for the bus stop when the rest of the gang move on to the Walnut Tree and the North Star.
Naked Beer Co. - Indecent Exposure4.50ExcellentGreat, creamy, Porter with dry finish.
Magic Rock - Ringmaster3.90GoodGood, refreshing, hoppy beer. Appeared lacking in body after the beer that had gone before.

Very busy indeed on a Friday evening. As usual, the efficient staff are completely on top of their game in here and service is quick.
Windswept - Blonde4.00ExcellentA great, hoppy, Pale Ale.
Slater's - Smoked Porter4.80ExcellentHeavily smoked.
Franklins - Smoked Chilli Porter5.00ExcellentA smooth, smoky Porter with an unexpected burn in the finish (I had not spotted the word ‘chilli’ on the pumpclip).

First session of a weekend-long beer festival. Twenty casks set up on a stillage in the yard, plus the usual line of handpumps inside. CAMRA discount available. There were a few more beers on than I have managed to record.
TicketyBrew - Stout5.20ExcellentRich and satisfying black stout.
Signature Brew - Candela Gold5.00ExcellentA cloudy amber colour. This I liked; strong and full-bodied and boosted by passion fruit juice. Others did not like it at all.
Arbor Ales - Monkey's Uncle5.00ExcellentA hoppy, amber-coloured beer. Very good.
West Berkshire - Bruce's Original Dogbolter6.00GoodStrong, dark Crystal malt beer, redolent of 1980s Friday nights in Lewisham.
TicketyBrew - Rose Wheat Beer4.50GoodA cloudy yellow/orange colour. Wheaty, with prominent rose flavours. Served too warm to be outstanding.
Quaffing Gravy - Jeune4.30AcceptableSweetish, blonde beer.
Roosters - Golden Eagle4.50AcceptableIn flat condition from the stillage, which cancelled out any spritziness from the use of champagne yeast.

About the Red Lion

The pub sign. Red Lion, Leytonstone, Greater London

Summary of Beer Scores

The pub is found in Leytonstone, Greater London, E11 3AA.

A large, historic (founded by 1670) town centre pub. Famous in the 60s and 70s as a live music venue, it has hosted such famous names as Led Zeppelin, Yes, Genesis and Roxy Music, plus local heroes Atomic Rooster. But knocked around and abused in recent years under a succession of themes. Taken over by Antic and re-opened in June 2011 as a 'traditional pub'. Instantly immensely popular. There is a large main bar with big tables for sharing, more of a dining lay-out to the part-screened rear area, and there is a big yard at the back. Pavement tables too, and an upstairs room that will one day be brought back in to use.

We have visited this pub 28 times, seen 199 different beers and tried 72 of them.
