The pub has had a bit of a refurb since I was last here. The main front bar is now laid out for eating as is the smaller front room. The back bar seems to be for the drinkers. There's new decking out the back too. It seems good and has an airier feel than before. Came down with Pete and met a bloke called Roger who was visiting Barfrestone for the first time since 1938 when he was 15. Ended up taking him back to Shepherdswell station as it was too far to walk.

Goacher's - Real Mild Ale3.40GoodLove the smell of this. Smokey, roast malts, milky texture in the mouth. Really good mild.
Dark Star - American Pale Ale (some has also been brewed by Fuller's)4.70GoodThis was my favourite at the Kent beer fest but I was a bit disappointed with this. It was still good and it had the hop aroma but it tasted a bit soapy and a touch sweet. I had a couple of pints pretty quickly though.
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - Seasider4.30GoodI think this is perhaps my favourite Gadds. Good malt hop balance, it's refreshing not astringent with a bitter finish.
Fyne - Piper's Gold3.80Not TriedPete had it and didn't like it. Can't say I liked it much at the beer fest either.

Unfortuneatly I didn't go to the Yew Tree but Werner (who lives near by) did and he spoke to the owner who said that the beers they regular had on were: Hopdaemon Incubus, Gadd's Seasider, Gadd's No. 7 and Goacher's Mild. The current guests are: Potbelly Crazy Daze, Darkstar American Pale Ale and Gadd's EKPA. So things are looking good at the Yew Tree. I really am going to have to get down there soon I think.

Cycled for 6 miles to get here and as I approached I was a little apprehensive about what beer line-up I’d find. The pub had been done-up. The sign was new, the rear patio had some cane-fencing and the interior looked clean and fresh. This is still a good pub.

Goacher's - Real Mild Ale3.40ExcellentThe first pint was quite sharp so they pulled off some more beer. The new pint was excellent. Full bodied with a smooth feel in the mouth. Roasted malt and coffee dominated. Sank 2 in half an hour

Arrived about 8pm and all the regulars were in the main bar. A new landlord took over on the 1st January and had rearranged the table layout somewhat. As we entered we were warmly greeted by, I guess, the new landlord who came round and put the fire on for us when we went into the empty the back bar. I was very glad to see that Goacher's and Hopdaemon were still being served.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Goacher's - Real Mild Ale3.40AcceptableUnderlying coffee flavours but an ever-so slightly vinegary finish.
Hopdaemon - Incubus4.00AcceptableSmelt wonderfull with lots of stawberry and lychee aromas. Tasted okay but a little stale. Sediment in the bottom of the glass suggested that this was bottom of the barrel.

Arived mid-afternoon to find a few regulars around the bar. A notice on the window about Charlie the landlord forefitting the tenancy was causing great interest.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Goacher's - Real Mild Ale3.40AcceptableQuite lively which gave it a sharpness like grapefruit. Some burnt notes but the sharpness overpowers.
Hook Norton - Hooky Bitter3.60AcceptableA orange malt flavour predominates in this pale golden beer. Sharp and intense orange bitter finish
Cottage - Dawlish Ale4.20PoorSharp sweet apple flavours but too tart for me. Jane thought it was excellent though

Only 3 people in when we arived and they all left straight away. It did start to fill up again after that.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hopdaemon - Incubus4.00ExceptionalNot my favourite Hopdaemon beer but still absolutely brillant. Lots of dark red fruit and some mellon. Wonderfully soft in the mouth with a subtle strawberry finish.
Archers - Special Bitter4.30GoodA dark beer that reminded me a bit of my first attempt at home brew (although Jane said it was much better than that). Quite malty with a soft mouth feel and a bit of peat-earth flavour.
Archers - IPA4.20GoodPale beer with a low hopping and lots of barnyard and hay flavours

Arived about 8.30pm and there were a handful of people in the bar. A few were sitting outside as it was so hot.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hopdaemon - Incubus4.00ExcellentI don't usually drink Incubus as I prefer Hopdaemon's other beers. However, this was lovely. Lots of mellon and lychee and grape with a rich red fruit and mild bitter finish.
Dark Star - Sunburst4.80ExcellentPale yellow and aggressively hoppy. Tastes of green hops with grapefruit and subtle lemon
Goacher's - Real Mild Ale3.40Not TriedWent off as I was there
B&T (Banks & Taylor's) - Dragon Slayer4.50Not TriedPale gold with a slightly sulphorous bitterness to it. Jane had it and really like it.

Arrived about 9.30pm and Charlie and Heather were sitting at the bar chatting to a customer. After half an hour of so a few more people came in.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Goacher's - Real Mild Ale3.40ExceptionalBitter black coffee flavours with a smooth slightly creamy undertaste. Great
Nethergate (was Nethergate Growler for a while then name reverted) - Umbel Magna5.00ExceptionalHaven't seen this beer for about 4 years so it was a real treat to see it on. Jet black beer with a creamy head. It smelt peppery and had a sharp perppery corriander taste with a creamy underlying texture.
Hopdaemon - Incubus4.00Not TriedHad a sip of Chris's and it tasted on top form
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - ESB5.50Not Tried
Moor - Merlin's Magic4.30Not TriedHad a sip of Jane's. A pale golden beer with a sharp American citrus hop taste
