Mid-evening and a quiz is in full swing. The pub is packed. Pub quizzes certainly do draw in the crowds these days.

An additional, back room has been brought into use since I last visited this pub. A good crowd in for mid-evening on a Monday. I may just have been unlucky on my visits, but it seems odd that this pub is not featuring the multitude of local brewers in the area.

Very quiet on an early Monday evening.
BeerABVScoreNotes

I’m a bit slow off the mark visiting this re-born pub, which has been open for over a week now. It appears still to be finding its feet, but looks to be another good local asset.

The pub is found in Bethnal Green, Greater London, E2 0AN.

This pub in Bethnal Green Road is believed to have been present by 1703 and by the mid-nineteenth century was trading as the George IV. It was rebuilt in its present form in 1880. Readers will be familiar with the Balls Brothers chain of pubs in the City of London – the Old George in fact became the first Balls Brothers pub, when brothers Henry Balls and William Austin Balls brought the pub from their father in 1897 and made it the base for their port wine importing business. By the 1990s and 2000s the story had become one of a large and well-known pub that was somehow not fulfilling its potential. Antic Pub Co. spotted this latent potential and acquired the pub, re-opening on 18 July 2013 after a typical Antic stripping back to basics. Part of the refurbishment has involved removal of the ground floor fascia boards to reveal some nice old Truman’s Brewery signage beneath. The pub is essentially one large room, with a good-sized rear garden. Transferred to Ei Group's Bermondsey Pub Company in 2019.

We have visited this pub 5 times, seen 19 different beers and tried 5 of them.
