Evening. Gentle hubbub of conversation with not too intrusive recorded soul music playing. 2 efficient barmaids were enjoying their jobs.

It was Arundel Festival day. Therefore Arundel was heaving. Isabel was having her face painted with her mum so I dashed around to see what the pubs were like. They all looked good.

The pub is found in Arundel, West Sussex, BN18 9AG.

In the High Street this building is a late 18th-century brick inn formerly known as The Red Lion and Anchor. Its earliest landlord (1793-8) was one William Souter. This early Henty & Constable alehouse, with its central door and ground floor bay windows on either side, was demolished in 1935. Originally, the drinking area surrounded a two-sided bar with dining room to the left, since which time it has had to expand to accommodate the increase in diners. A remaining feature is the hanging ‘bush’, displayed as a hop flower made of painted, carved wood together with the bracketed inn sign. 5 handpumps, 1 of which regularly carries a draught cider.

We have visited this pub twice, seen 5 different beers and tried 1 of them.
