Late afternoon. Always a pleasure to visit this pub. Surprised though to find no Sussex beer on cask.

I arrived at noon opening time on a wet Sunday and had my pick of the limited number of seats in this tiny brew-pub. It soon filled with locals. Five years since my last visit.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Kemptown - Black4.50ExcellentBlack in colour. Chocolaty, a bit roasty, some slight sourness. Somewhere between a stout and an old ale I think.
Bedlam - Hoppy Golden Ale4.20GoodGolden and slightly hazy. Has a good hop character from Summit and Cluster, whilst being easy-drinking.
St Austell - Proper Job4.50Not Tried

Friendly welcome on a Saturday lunch time with just a few locals in. Liefmans Kriek and Hacker Pschorr also available on tap.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Kemptown - Ye Olde Trout4.50GoodAmber colour with lasting thin beige head. Toasty, malty best bitter. Roasty toasty aroma. Really quite aggressive hops. Really rather lovely.
Kemptown - Kemptown4.00GoodPale copper colour with thin off white head. Very earthy bitter, really very good intense hop on finish. Earthy hop aroma, almost astringent towards the end. Not exactly subtle, but interesting.
Kemptown - Dragon's Blood5.20AcceptableHazy reddish brown colour with pinkish head. Very strong hop again, bit too much alpha acid throws it out of balance. Some toasty malt. Some nice cherry fruit in mouth with slight fruit aroma. Malts are decent, not sure of this one. Not horrible, but just slightly odd.

The pub is found in Brighton, East Sussex, BN2 1JN.

Interesting corner pub in the Kemptown area of Brighton in Upper St James's Street, and former home of the Kempton Brewery and now home to the Hand Brewing Co. which starts at the top of the building and runs down to the cellar. Corner bar has 6 handpumps normally with 2-3 from the brewery and 1 or 2 guests and serves one smallish room. Exposed stones on one wall, old newspapers cover the stairs. Framed pictures on the ceiling and there is an interesting collection of ties and an old one armed bandit. Very interesting brew pub to go to.

We have visited this pub 8 times, seen 28 different beers and tried 10 of them.
