It often seems to be near empty when I come in here – I expect I’m just coming at unpopular times. Just five or six other customers this-evening and only two cask beers on the bar.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Volden - Juniper4.80GoodA decent enough Brown Ale. Just the sort of thing that my friends grumble that none of the new wave of craft brewers are bothering to brew anymore.
Volden - Session (or Session Ale)3.80Not Tried

Late afternoon / early evening. Just a few people in at the tail end of Sunday roast dinner time.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Tiny Rebel - Cwtch4.60ExcellentA reliably excellent pint.

Steady trade here. The furniture has been moved around since my last visit and the pub somehow feels more comfortable and welcoming.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Attaboy4.60GoodGolden, fresh and hoppy.
Volden - Session (or Session Ale)3.80AcceptableThe new (and more comprehensible) name for the beer formerly known as Vim. A rather run-of-the-mill, pale Bitter.
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Swift3.90Not Tried

I actually had to turn down three “Do you fancy a pint after work?” offers, not getting away from the office until 8-ish. Then I ended up having one here on my own. Busy.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Blindside4.40GoodThis was much better than the pint of this beer I drank earlier in the week. Tasty, with a good bite.

Early evening visit and the pub is very quiet. Rather limited beer selection too.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Adnams - Dry Hopped Lager (keg)4.20ExcellentOn keg dispense, and recommended to me by the barman. Wonderful hoppy smell and good hop flavours. More carbonated than I like. The sort of beer that What’s Brewing letter writers would rave about if drunk in Europe or the US but would deride as ‘rubbish’ without even trying it on an English bar.
Adnams - Southwold Bitter3.70Good
Sharp's - Doom Bar4.00Not Tried

Evening until close and muchly beyond until Argentina won its World Cup football semi-final on penalties. Very friendly and knowledgeable barman.
BeerABVScoreNotes
East London (ELB) - Cowcatcher4.80Excellent£3.90 a pint but moreish. Probably the best East London beer I have had. Dry aftertaste
Sharp's - Doom Bar4.00Not Tried
King Beer (formerly W.J. King) - Working Class Hero3.60Not Tried

Very quiet on a Wednesday early evening – no doubt the present transport difficulties in London have put people off. A pork pie and beer dinner for me here.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Adnams / Camden Town Collaboration - South Town4.90ExcellentFull-bodied and very tasty. In contrast to the Mosaic, this was in excellent condition.
Adnams - Mosaic Pale Ale4.10GoodLight and hoppy, but in sub-prime condition.
Sharp's - Doom Bar4.00Not Tried

Opening night and there is a good crowd of local residents in to see what the pub has to offer.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Adnams - Mosaic Pale Ale4.10ExcellentVery pleased to finally catch up with this beer, which is as lusciously hoppy as I was expecting.
Adnams / Camden Town Collaboration - South Town4.90AcceptableA shadow of the beer I enjoyed elsewhere recently, served to green and with flavours undeveloped.
Dark Star - Hophead (some has also been brewed by Fuller's)3.80Not Tried
Sharp's - Doom Bar4.00Not Tried

The pub is found in Bow, Greater London, E3 3LL.

This pub in Devas Street was established by 1900, probably earlier in fact, as the Duke of Wellington. It was a Watney’s pub and it was rebuilt sometime in the 1960s or 70s at the foot of a block of flats, when the whole area was redeveloped. The main road outside became a bit of a racetrack and the pub declined into a somewhat unappealing locals’ place, before closing in 2010. That was expected to be the end of the story, until the area was again gripped by regeneration in 2014 and the Antic Collective re-opened the pub, now stripped-back to basics, in April 2014. The local pub stock has been almost completely decimated, and this place stands near free of nearby competition. Very handy for Bromley-by-Bow tube station. Although the address is in Devas Street the entrance is on its corner with the west side of Blackwell Tunnel Northern Approach. Usual Antic shabby chic including a long and narrow and distressed wooden workbench with vices still attached. Restaurant area with an open view kitchen. 6 handpumps on the bar counter.

We have visited this pub 8 times, seen 17 different beers and tried 10 of them.
