Early evening break whilst on a local history walk around Spitalfields and Whitechapel. This pub has a clever knack of being both highly fashionable and highly traditional at the same time. It’s expensive though.

The walk group I’m with arrive here to taste the Truman’s Runner, but only the Swift is on. The pub is very busy already and it takes a while to get served – one barmaid is receiving a ticking off for being rude to customers. My pint costs an acceptable £3:85 but I’m horrified to hear that a half of the same beer is £2:50.

Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Swift3.90AcceptableTruman’s ‘entry-level’ beer. Golden. The grist has 10% wheat and the hopping is mostly with Saaz, to give a soft, lager-like taste.

The pub is found in Spitalfields, Central London, E1 6LZ.

This pub was established before 1821 and rebuilt in its present neo-Georgian style in around 1930. There are two separate bars, still mostly wood-panelled and retaining the names of old Truman’s brands, engraved into the woodwork. A fully-functional neon Truman’s sign still adorns the outside of the building. The landlady has been here for 30 years and the pub is associated in many people’s minds with local artists such as Tracey Emin and Gilbert & George. One of 21 inter-war pubs across the country granted a Grade II listing by Historic England in 2015.

We have visited this pub twice, seen 3 different beers and tried 2 of them.
