Late Sunday afternoon and it’s fairly quiet here, although getting busier all the time as we head towards early evening. Nine different beers available from the tanks.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Hackney Wick) - Summer Fruit APA 5.50ExcellentAnother murky golden beer. Fresh and hoppy and lovely.
Howling Hops (Hackney Wick) - Passion Fruit Gose 4.50GoodMurky gold in colour. Very fruity and salty too and tart as well. I was completely puckered by the time the glass was empty.
20 Jun 2017 (Stephen Harris)
Somehow the food did not seem to hit the heights tonight, but the beer was as good as ever.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Hackney Wick) - Pale Ale No. 23.80ExcellentA very cloudy, yellowish-coloured beer that is heavily hopped with Ella, Chinook and Galaxy). Staff have started warning customers just how cloudy it is.
Howling Hops (Hackney Wick) - IPA New England Special 6.90ExcellentCloudy gold. A very lush IPA.
Howling Hops (Hackney Wick) - Das Köolsch Lager Bier 4.60GoodI’m not sure if this is the same beer that I have drunk as ‘Kölsch’ when in cask format. Sweetish and golden.
01 Jun 2017 (Stephen Harris)
Mid-evening call for dinner and a couple of beers. For some reason I am off the hoppy stuff today. Nine home-brewed beers to choose from today.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Hackney Wick) - Cherry Gose4.50GoodBright red. Salty and sweet.
Howling Hops (Hackney Wick) - Grisette3.60GoodLight and refreshing.

I now have the advantage of a door-to-door bus service from this bar to my house (the No. 339). I should use it more often.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Hackney Wick) - Black XX No. 1 5.50ExcellentA lovely Black IPA – I’ve missed it.
Howling Hops (Hackney Wick) - Double Coffee Chocolate Toffee Vanilla Milk Porter 6.30ExcellentHeavy and rich. Each of the listed ingredients is discernible.
Howling Hops (Hackney Wick) - East End Hefeweizen4.50GoodCloudy, golden, banana. Slightly acidic.
05 Mar 2017 (Stephen Harris)
Evening meal and a few beers. A very pleasant atmosphere in here.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Hackney Wick) - IPA No. 3 (West Coast Special) 6.90ExcellentSublime. More hops in this one glass than I tasted in 10 days abroad recently.
Howling Hops (Hackney Wick) - Cherry Gose4.50GoodPale red/pink in colour. Mouth-puckeringly sour. Cherries and some salt.
Howling Hops (Hackney Wick) - Vienna Lager6.00GoodNot a style I’m very fond of, but I thought I’d give it a go. Amber in colour. Malt dominated – caramel.

My first time in here this year and I had almost forgotten just how good the food and the beer is (10 different beers available today). A note on the beer dispense method in use at this bar: All beers are served direct from the conditioning tanks, coming on as soon as they are ready and remaining on until the tank is empty. The beer is protected by what I think we used to call ‘blanket pressure’ – so beer does come into contact with gas and carbonation is low when the beer is fresh but builds up over time. These are not therefore ‘real ales’, unlike key-keg beers which are real ale by CAMRA’s definition.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Hackney Wick) - NZ Pale Ale5.10ExcellentInevitably, this is a pale and hoppy beer. The hops are Motueka and Nelson Sauvin. I need to increase my vocabulary for visits here if I am to capture the nuances of the different hop combinations.
Howling Hops (Hackney Wick) - Pale Ale No. 23.80ExcellentExcellent and exceptionally murky. An almost milky, thick, orangey colour. Hopped with Ella, Cascade and Galaxy.
Howling Hops (Hackney Wick) - IPA No. 3 (West Coast Special) 6.90ExcellentPale cold in colour and a huge smack in the face of hops.
04 Dec 2016 (Stephen Harris)
It’s been a lovely day to be afoot in London and I have been exploring all over the place. It’s amazing though how many of these fairly random Sunday walks somehow seem to end up here.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Hackney Wick) - Chocolate Stout4.80ExcellentActually, maybe not all the beers here are hoppy. This one is silky smooth and chocolatey and sweet.
Howling Hops (Hackney Wick) - 1/2 IPA3.00ExcellentFresh from the tank, this beer has an almost alarming, cloudy yellow colour. It is sharply hoppy.
Howling Hops (Hackney Wick) - Ruby Red Dinner Ale 5.00GoodA hoppy (they all are here), US-style Red.
04 Nov 2016 (Stephen Harris)
Great beer and food here. Eight tank beers available. A boffin was telling me that the beer dispense technology here is pretty much identical to that used by the Zero Degrees chain.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Hackney Wick) - IPA No. 2 (West Coast Special) 6.90ExcellentGorgeous.
Howling Hops (Hackney Wick) - Raspberry Ripple Ice Cream Pale Ale 5.50ExcellentAmber in colour. Raspberry and hops harmony with a creamy background taste. A very clever beer.
Howling Hops - Burton Ale c.1924 5.40GoodA cloudy golden colour. Not like any Burton Ale I have ever drunk elsewhere.

I ate in here this-evening for the first time and was not surprised to discover that the food is really good and tasty. All ten tanks were in use.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Hackney Wick) - Uto – Double Black IPA 9.30ExceptionalA collaboration beer with Verdant Brewery. I must be in paradise, a 9.3% Black IPA.
Howling Hops (Hackney Wick) - American Brown4.70ExcellentA murky brown beer, well-hopped with Citra, Mosaic, Amarillo and Simcoe.
23 Jul 2016 (Stephen Harris)
I came here after enjoying an afternoon watching athletics at the Olympic Stadium. Lots of other people had the same idea, so for a while it was very busy at the bar. About 7 beers available.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Hackney Wick) - IPA No. 2 (West Coast Special) 6.90ExcellentAnother pale hop bomb, this time with Mosaic, Columbus, Amarillo and Simcoe in the mix.
Howling Hops (Hackney Wick) - Aussie Pale5.20Not TriedA golden beer, well-hopped with Summer and Ella hops. Strength given today as 5.5%.

The pub is found in Hackney, Greater London, E9 5EN.

The Howling Hops Brewery was established in July 2012 in the cellar of the Cock Tavern at Hackney Central. Very cramped conditions limited output and the varied range of beers could generally only be found in the pub. June 2015 saw the opening of a substantially larger brewery in Queens Yard, Hackney Wick and the associated, large Taproom. This occupies a former industrial premises, with the brewery itself at one end and a large space occupied by trestle tables at the other. Outside seating is also available and there is also a kitchen and a café-style counter. Uniquely in London at present, all the beers are poured directly from the conditioning tanks. Nearly as unusually, beers are only sold in two-third pint measures. The brewery stands almost next door to Crate Brewery.

We have visited this pub 26 times, seen 36 different beers and tried 35 of them.
