Evening after a visit to Sadlers Wells for a bit of culture. Not busy, unlike the extremely noisy Exmouth Arms nearby, that we avoided. Reluctance by the bartender to to top up a clearly short pint. We sat inside and watched sunshine and heavy showers, and I read Chris E’s interesting entries. He is sadly missed.

We came here for lunch and beer, the food was very good indeed as were the beers. Much busier than on my previous visit, it is amazing how much difference an hour can make. I have not listed all the beers that were on offer as we sat in the restaurant with table service and I did not go to the bar to note the beers.

Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Firestarter4.20ExcellentFruity ruby red ale brewed to commemorate the Great Fire of london in 1666 which is coincidentally the year in which the original Trumans started brewing in Brick Lane.

Late morning, I must confess that I only popped in here because I was waiting for the nearby Old China Hand to open at 12:00. The pub was fairly quiet at this time of the day and the bar staff friendly and attentive. I had a chance to read the food menu and it looked very good and could be worth trying at some time in the future. There was a 3.9% abv house beer named Stag & Griffin on offer as well as the beers listed below, provenance unknown but named after the 19th Century Stag & Griffin perched on either side of the pub's front door.

A complete transformation here since my last visit which was in pre-GK days. Busy, with a charity function occupying the back of the bar area and an upstairs room.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hogs Back - Hopping Hog IPA5.40ExcellentA very English-tasting IPA – scarcer than the US-style. Amber/brown, malty, good peppery hop presence. I enjoyed this – especially when I was given a free half after the last inch of my first pint was ‘tidied up’ whilst I was in the gents.

The pub is found in Clerkenwell, Central London, EC1R 4RL.

A street corner pub close to Exmouth Market in Rosebery Avenue, present since at least 1820 as the Wilmington Arms. Historically a Watney’s house, it retained three separate bars when it was acquired by Greene King in 1994. Revamped in 2013 and shifted into the Metropolitan Pub Co. arm of Greene King. The bars were opened out and walls stripped back to bare brick, with restoration of a skylight at the rear. The pub was moved considerably upmarket, with half of the floor space now given over to diners. The ‘Arms’ part of the name seems to have been lost for the time being.

We have visited this pub 5 times, seen 11 different beers and tried 7 of them.
