Late evening, and the clientele consists largely of a mature group of classical musicians in for a beer or two after rehearsals at St Anne’s church – somewhat belying this pub’s party reputation.

The pub is found in Limehouse, Greater London, E14 8HH.

This pub was established in 1803 as the Five Bells, the reference being to the five bells which rang at knocking off time in the nearby docks. At the time there were a great many more pubs in the area than there are today, mostly catering to the needs of thirsty sailors and dock workers. The name was extended to Five Bells & Bladebone in 1845 when a whalebone recovered from one of the docks was put on display in the pub. But, note that there are a number of different versions of the story around the pub's name. It was an Ind Coope house (and I think probably part of the original Taylor Walker Brewery estate). The pub received a makeover in 2000 and was renamed the 5b Urban Bar. The exterior décor can best be described as ‘colourful’. Inside it is rather eclecticly furnished. Cosy rear garden.

We have visited this pub once, seen 3 different beers and tried 1 of them.
