The trains were running on time despite some awful weather conditions, so I was able to time things exactly right for a pint and a train, this pub has had a considerable amount of money spent on it recently, but unfortunately we were the only customers.

Well it was New Year's Eve, and I had some time to kill before the train and I really like the fact that the pub takes a couple of copies of The Independent for discerning customers to read. So I sat and read the sports pages, especially the bits about England beating South Africa in the 2nd Test whilst having a beer.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter3.70AcceptableAt first I thought watery, but it got better as I drank it. No bad or inoffensive flavours or bits to it.
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale)4.20AcceptableBeen some time since I had this. It's fine. A decent best bitter.

I had a puncture on my bike and I didn't fix it quickly enough, which meant I missed my train by a minute (one of those horrible times where you can see the train pull out as you get onto the platform), so I had an hour to kill. Came here and read the Independent which they always have copies of for customers to read. It's an ok pub and I don't mind having a couple here if trains are late.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter3.70AcceptableSecond pint was better than the first, but it is still just a bitter. Decent yeast character on aroma, but the body and finish just aren't full enough or flavourful enough for me.

I had 20 mins to wait for my train and this pub is only 2 mins away on the bike so its just about the best place I have to get a beer before the train goes. They take The Independent newspaper so I have something to read and the Rugby Union blokes can be entertaining in the saloon bar. Staff behind the bar and friendly and I've never had a bad pint of Sheps here.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter3.70AcceptableGood condition even some interesting herb, but still a fairly standard bitter.

I had a good day, so I thought I would treat myself to some drinks. So I did a bit of a tour starting here and then carrying on in Ashford
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter3.70AcceptableAbsolutely fine, but I just want more flavour/interest in my beers.

I've been travelling from Folkestone West for 13 years and not been here even though it is only 2 minutes away. Seemed friendly enough and a nice place for a quiet pint before the train.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter3.70GoodIn excellent condition and it actually had hops in it. Drinkable session bitter in this form.

The pub is found in Cheriton, Kent, CT20 3QE.

First built in 1867 as the Shorncliffe Arms, the pub stands opposite Folkestone West railway station and was renamed the Railway Hotel in 1887. It quickly became the last watering hole for many soldiers billeted in nearby barracks before they boarded trains for overseas missions. The pub was unofficially known as the Nailbox for many years because of a nearby woodworking shop. Employees there said they were going to ‘fetch something from the nailbox’ - a euphemism for nipping out for a swift glass of beer! The nickname was recognised in 1971 when the pub was renamed. Corner local, traditional 2 room pub with saloon and public bar (darts and pool table) served by central bar.

We have visited this pub 6 times, seen 3 different beers and tried them all.
