Best beer and my favourite pub of an evening’s exploration in York. Possibly the busiest too, with live jazz drawing a local crowd.

An ancient (1640), Grade II*-listed building converted to pub use from a former restaurant in November 2015. Divided into several drinking areas over three floors, the small bar at the very front has an exceptionally high bar counter.
