Arriving in Malton’s market square in mid-afternoon in pouring rain I was surprised to find the place running with foxhounds and to see various horse riding redcoats sipping from stirrup cups. Being an inveterate townie and well aware that I have no ‘understanding’ of such country events, I thought the best thing to do was to duck into the nearest pub until they were gone- it happened to be here.
