A few beers were shown as not available. My friend had a pint of Harviestoun - Schiehallion which he had to return as vinegar from the Muggleton another Maidstone Wetherspoons pub in Maidstone this afternoon, as I did last Wednesday.Several regulars were drinking Guiness. Why? Whats going on? Beer quality is slipping.Several reports here of below standard beers in Wetherspoons pubs in Kent. Perhaps they cant keep their beers in good condition in hot weather?
| Stonehenge - Danish Dynamite | 5.00 | | Nothing like the beer that I love. |
11 Jul 2010 (Pedro)

Two Flower Pot regulars in here tonite who were not impressed either.(This is why I revert to my other favourite tipple, Guinness..........?). They could do better than this,
| Caledonian - Nectar | 4.30 | | Very refreshing and zesty, one of Cally's better types. Stayed on this for a bit! |

14 Jun 2010 (Dosser)
This pub seems to have on at least 10 beers. Wow!!Until the manager tells you most arent available. He cant turn the pump clips around as he will lose 'points' if the mystery wetherspoons shopper turns up. Unfortuntely this way he will lose customers. Advertising beers that arent on and will not be on is surely against the trade descriptions Act? What happened to the available soon signs?
| Cairngorm - Highland IPA | 5.00 | | |
12 Jun 2010 (Kentish Al)

| Kelham Island - Night Rider | 5.20 | | Excellant. And, afraid I quaffed the last two pints tonite. But Dosser just turned up to have a mouthful of mine before it had all gone! This ale stood out amongst the 50 sampled recently. My beer of the festival with the Otter Mild runner up and Black Chalice in third spot. (Not at all biased towards the Dark Un's!). |

Arrived at 1745 and, at last, the final two festival ales needed were found here! And yet again, as per last October, even with the slow turnover in the Muggleton, these two Wetherspoons have provided all 50 of the festival Ales between them. Well done.
| Kelham Island - Night Rider | 5.20 | | Superb. A decent stout and the last new ale needed. Devoured five pints of this! |

24 Apr 2010 (Whinger)
About 13:00 hours on a Saturday. The usual mix of drinkers and families, with the added sound of a group of Morris Dancers walking around trying to find a table, and going to the bar.
| Phoenix - Black Shadow Mild | 4.00 | | A delicious dark mild. |
| Herold - Black Chalice | 4.80 | | Black with a white creamy head. Full of flavour, I enjoyed this pint. |

23 Apr 2010 (Kentish Al)
Arrived at 2100 and getting busy. Only one ale changed.
| Marstons - Dragons Tale | 4.50 | | New on for St Georges Day. Nothing special, pale bitter, but went down well. A sponsored beer under the Run for your Life banner. 10p per pint going to JD's chosen charity. |
22 Apr 2010 (Ian)
After seeing that Kentish Al had seen 4 of the festival beers that I'd not had yet at this pub last night, I took a couple of hours off work and popped up to Maidstone to try them. Especially as it was the Culloden which I'd been looking out for. That's why I love this site, you see a beer on at a pub that you want and then you go. Easy.
| Atlas - Wayfarer IPA | 4.40 | | Clear gold, lasting creamy head due to quite tight sparklers used here. Bit of yeast on aroma, but quite pleasing citrusy American hops too. Hugely drinkable in the body. The hops on the finish are really attractive, right level of bitterness, citrusy grapefruit flavour and develops a very good aftertaste. A golden ale done well. |
| Cairngorm - Culloden | 4.20 | | Deep reddy brown with a firm thickish collar of light tan foam. A slightly choccy initial taste. Then some sweet dark fruits kick in. More milk choc on aroma. The mix of choc, slight roast/toast and then jammy fruit, is a little unusual. Not unattractive at all. In fact I quite like it. The half pint lasted just 4 gulps and less than 5 mins, in fact extremely likeable beer with some sting on the finish which is more sour fruit than hop. Excellent. |
| Three Bs - Oatmeal Stout | 3.80 | | Very decent choc flavours, a bit overly harsh on the roasted malts maybe, bit of tar and liquorice, good tasty stout though. |
| Weltons - Hawthorn | 4.20 | | Atificial lemon and ginger, tasted a bit like washing up liquid. |
22 Apr 2010 (Kentish Al)
On this 2200 visit and some slight changes from the night before. Can echo Ian's comments. The bang up to date info is spot on using Pubsandbeer!
| Herold - Black Chalice | 4.80 | | My kind of beer. Two pints and a 5* rating. Excellant. |
| Cairngorm - Culloden | 4.20 | | Tried again and thought it was even better than the night before. |
| Highgate - Davenport's Beer Hunter | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
| Daleside - Spring Frenzy | 3.40 | Not Tried | |
| Everard's - Val-Dieu Abbaye Blonde | 5.50 | Not Tried | |

| Weltons - Hawthorn | 4.20 | Not Tried | |
21 Apr 2010 (Kentish Al)
Another post 2200 visit and not disappointed either. (The "other" JD still had no changes!)
| Cairngorm - Culloden | 4.20 | | A new ale and fresh on tonite and top class. Dark and very tasty. |
| Atlas - Wayfarer IPA | 4.40 | | An excellant and tasty IPA type, although, it should'nt taste of Peach! (The Beartown ale was next door. Obvious to me because I've sampled plenty of the Peach, but, bossman Tim here needed "advising"? Some confusion reigned earlier in the evening I believe as well? Went down really well though. |
| Beartown - Peach Melbear | 4.40 | | Superb. And not at all like Atlas Wayfarer! |
| Three Bs - Oatmeal Stout | 3.80 | | A good "nightcap"? |

20 Apr 2010 (Kentish Al)
At 2200, after finding no changes in the "other" JD, this consistently good JD came up trumps yet again with two ale changes tonite.
| Weltons - Hawthorn | 4.20 | | A new beer to me, a golden ale, with so much going on. The refreshingly tasteful citrus with the zesty ginger notes made this ale an outstanding find. I'm sure the ladies here would enjoy this ale? For me, it was three pints worth of total enjoyment! |
| Wooden Hand - Cornish Buccaneer | 4.30 | | A very nice ale. |
| Roosters - Patriot | 4.70 | Not Tried | |
| Butcombe - Blonde | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
| Saltaire - Bulldog | 4.80 | Not Tried | |
| Three Bs - Oatmeal Stout | 3.80 | Not Tried | |
| Highgate - Davenport's Beer Hunter | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
| Otter - Otter Mild | 3.80 | Not Tried | |
19 Apr 2010 (Kentish Al)
At 2200, with no changes in the "other" JD nearby, it was straight on to here with only two changes noted.
| Saltaire - Bulldog | 4.80 | | Three samples for £1.89, and this first one, spot on again. |
| Phoenix - Black Shadow Mild | 4.00 | | An excellant mild. |
| Otter - Otter Mild | 3.80 | | Another outstanding mild. In tip top condition and a strong contender for my ale of the festival! |
| Roosters - Patriot | 4.70 | | Not sampled since 2003. Very nice bitter and in very good condition. |
| Butcombe - Blonde | 5.00 | | A new version of an old beer, last sampled in 2004. This is a very light ale, refreshinly good for summertime, in good nick and now 4.7%. |
| Three Bs - Oatmeal Stout | 3.80 | | Good taste and still in good condition. |
| Nethergate - Red Poll | 4.20 | | Another tasty dark bitter. |
| Highgate - Davenport's Beer Hunter | 4.50 | | Still in fair condition tonite. |
18 Apr 2010 (Kentish Al)
2030 visit and a fair crowd in. Only one new ale added since recent postings.

2300 and less busy now and three new ales on!

| Brew Dog - Trashy Blonde | 4.10 | | Excellant. |
| Saltaire - Bulldog | 4.80 | | The third new one that came on at mid-night! An excellant brown ale to finish my night off. |
| Triple fff - Rock Lobster | 4.00 | | New on tonite and top class. |
16 Apr 2010 (Kentish Al)
Gone 2300 and much less busy now.
| Okells - Alt | 5.00 | | A new ale on today, and top class. |
| Brew Dog - Trashy Blonde | 4.10 | | An ale from my No.1 favourite craft brewer. Excellant. |
| Budelse - Capucijn | 6.00 | | In tip top condition. |
| Caledonian - Old Seadog IPA | 5.20 | | The third new ale found tonite, "available soon", but put on after mid-night! A top dog IPA that kept me busy until 1am? |
| Three Bs - Oatmeal Stout | 3.80 | | Second new ale tonite, was "available soon" but came on after mid-night, so, had to have it! A bit weak to be proper stout, but very tasty, good head and lingering dark malts. |
15 Apr 2010 (Kentish Al)
At 2130, and with no changes in the "other" JD, the Society Rooms saved the night with one new ale and some..
| St Peter's - Old Style Porter | 5.10 | | Two more pints of this excellant porter to end the night! |
| Hydes - Over a Barrel | 4.10 | | A new ale, and pretty good for a Hydes ale, and decent temperature/condition here tonite. |

14 Apr 2010 (Kentish Al)
At 2215, two new ales on and two more to saviour! Still holding up in consistency.
| Oakham - Rollercoaster | 4.80 | | Very very good. Much better taste for this second new ale tonite. |
| St Peter's - Old Style Porter | 5.10 | | Did not need any nudging to re-sample a pint of this superb ale. |
| Banks's - Maui Brewery Coconut Porter | 5.00 | | Good to see it on again here. Very good as well. |
| Daleside - Spring Frenzy | 3.40 | | This is No.1 on the festival list, and not too bad. Good malt taste, but one pint was enough. |
| Marstons - Zululand Zulu Blonde | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
| Banks's - Morrells Oxford Blue | 3.70 | Not Tried | |
| Everard's - Flourish | 3.50 | Not Tried | |

| Banks's - Maui Brewery Coconut Porter | 5.00 | | Superb, and in tip top condition, alas, no time to sample more than a pint! |

11 Apr 2010 (Ian)
Sunday lunchtime not too busy, still the smell of breakfast in the air.
| Shepherd Neame - Fremlins Bitter | 3.50 | | Copper lasting beige head. Yeasty flowery aroma, yes I would say it tastes like Fremlins, Decent yeasty session bitter. |
| Elgood's - Hawkwind | 4.50 | | Gold, orange with slight haze, lasting off white head. It's an ok bitter. May be getting towards end of barrel. Quite earthy. Some yeast some hop on finish. OK. |
11 Apr 2010 (Whinger)
I saw on this site that Ian had found Fremlins Bitter on sale here today, so I was on the next train to Maidstone. Typical Sunday afternoon with people having Sunday lunches, and I noticed a considerable demand for Fremlins. The person behind the bar had no idea that Fremlins used to be a Maidstone firm.
| Shepherd Neame - Fremlins Bitter | 3.50 | | Yeasty aroma, and some resemblance to the old Fremlins taste. It is considerably better than the beer that came out of Cheltenham before Fremlins was discontinued by Whitbread. |
11 Apr 2010 (Kentish Al)

Still no fest ales on, so, just a Guinness to be sociable with a couple I know. Very quiet.
05 Apr 2010 (Kentish Al)
Tonite, after visiting the excellant Muggletons, this place, unusually, was a disgrace, with only the Ruddles on offer! Straight out the door..
| Greene King - Ruddles Best | 3.70 | Not Tried | Enough said! |
03 Apr 2010 (Kentish Al)
A mid evening visit and not too crowded either. And good to see the excellant cellarman from the Swan on this side of the bar for a change! Also found the up coming beer festival programme/tasting notes here, and it certainly looks good! Word also reaches me that, as per last October's beer festival, all 50 ales will be available in both the Maidstone JDw's. Bring it on!
| York - Centurion's Ghost Ale | 5.40 | | Still in top condtion. |
| Leeds - Midnight Bell | 4.80 | | Still in top condition here. Complete contrast to Folkestone sample tasted earlier in the day. So good it all sold out this evening? |
| Phoenix - Double Gold | 5.00 | | New on here today, and in top condition. |
02 Apr 2010 (Kentish Al)
A late evening post Planet Thanet visit, which I really shouldn't of after such a good day in Margate!
| Ramsbury - Gold | 4.50 | | Light and refreshing and in top condition. |
| York - Centurion's Ghost Ale | 5.40 | | Top class big & dark un', on form too. |
| Leeds - Midnight Bell | 4.80 | | Exceptional and stunningly good premium mild ale.
Sampled four pints of this.
The "key" with both the Maidstone JD's is to catch the ales when they've just been put on, as all three ales tonite were new and all were served in tip top codition. Roll on the festival! |
31 Mar 2010 (Kentish Al)
Late evening visit.
| Moorhouses - Premier Bitter | 3.80 | | From deepest Lancashire. A replacement for the Mad Hatter. An all round good session bitter from an established and famous brewery. In top condition tonight from the brewery that defies the recession and has, by the end of 2008 produced 13% more beer and made 12% more profit. |
| Roosters - Good Cheer | 3.70 | | From deepest Yorkshire, a reasonably nice light, pale bitter. Called GCB-Good Cheer Beer. Past it's best on my second sampling/visit this week. |
| Tom Wood - Harvest Bitter | 4.30 | | From the Highwood Brewery in deepest Grimsby. Light and pale and nothing special. Note; As per the recent budget, all drinks have gone up in price in JDW's. Now a "whopping" £2.05 for a pint of real ale! |
| Banks & Taylor - Mad Hatter | 4.20 | Not Tried | First of the night but went "off" before my eyes! |
27 Mar 2010 (Kentish Al)
A fairly busy early evening session.

Late evening after work visit.
| Caledonian - Deuchars IPA | 3.80 | | In fairly good condition. |
| Archers - Golden Bitter | 4.70 | | Refreshing, zesty ale. |
25 Mar 2010 (Kentish Al)
| Shepherd Neame - Bishops Finger | 5.00 | Not Tried | Disappointed this week to have missed what is a rare beer round these parts! |
18 Mar 2010 (Kentish Al)
A late evening visit and good to see the incredibly smoky Gael Rua ale on here.
| Brewsters - Ice Queen | 4.80 | | Refreshingly zesty ale, a much needed "palate cleaner" after the smoky Gael Rua! |
| Hilden - Gael Rua | 4.30 | | Not in the best of conditon here, probably nearing the end. |
17 Mar 2010 (Kentish Al)
A late evening visit here to partake in the cheaper than usual Guinness on offer for St Patrick's day!
| Brewsters - Ice Queen | 4.80 | Not Tried | |
27 Feb 2010 (Pedro)
evening
| Oakham - Bishops Farewell | 4.60 | | One of my favourite beers, it looked great but it had no flavour, and I couldn't drink it all !
Didn't bother looking at other beers ! |
07 Feb 2010 (Angie)
Only a few beers on, but found one i liked. Much better pub than the Muggleton, Maidstones other Wetherspoons pub. Walked in during the week. They looked like they had 11 beers on, but when i tried to order a beer, the first 5 were not on!!So I walked out. Against the trade descriptions act? Just turn the handpump around please or advertise your most popular beer as sorry not available!

16 Sep 2009 (Ian)
Ok so its not the best pub in the world but it is right next to the railway station and the beer quality is very good for any pub now never mind for a 'Spoons. I really trust this pub for beer now. Usual mix of drinkers and office types at 5 in the afternoon.
| Summerskills - Barley Mow | 4.80 | | Aroma of toffee sour fruits and malt. Great condition and lovely deep malts great sour fruit and bit of sting on finish. Great beer i would have again. |
| St Austell - Proper Job | 4.50 | | Really drinkable english IPA with a usa hop twist. Great mouth feel. Just a bit too much toffee on this half. Still very good though. |

| Evan-Evans - Warrior | 4.40 | | Pretty good for here ! |
17 Apr 2009 (Andrew)
It's a spoons by a station. I was only here because of Ian's desire to sip more spoonsfest beers.
| Salopian - Darwin's Origin | 4.30 | | Not actually a festival beer which was a shame as it was better than those festival beers I tried. Rich orangy syrupy beer with lots of citrus hops. |
| JW Lees - Hopping Mad | 3.50 | | Dark mild. Sweet and malty with a bit of burntness. Bit tart. |
| Bend Brewing - Wild Blue Yonder | 4.80 | | A red early hopped Irish style beer. Why? Poor. |
| Hook Norton - Jackpot | 3.80 | | Bad eggy yeasty tart stuff. |
17 Apr 2009 (Ian)
Certainly the better of the 2 Spoons in Maidstone now for beer. And so close to the station you can run out, get a quick pint and catch a train five minutes later, great for connections.
| Salopian - Darwin's Origin | 4.30 | | After drinking some disappointing festival beers, this was superb. Gold, lasting beige head. Lots of grapefruit hop on aroma. Lots of hops everywhere. That is excellent uber hoppy beer for the UK. Resiny hops, lovely. |
| JW Lees - Hopping Mad | 3.50 | | Dark ruby, lasting dark beige head. It’s like a mild. Sweetish malt. Really quite a good mild. Not sure what the hop angle is unless you wanted a hoppy beer, then had this, then you would be hopping mad. But as a mild totally fine. |
| Bend Brewing - Wild Blue Yonder | 4.80 | | In the style of an amber ale, but lacks the PNW hop kick. Malts are alright, some nice red fruit, some hop dryness, but as I say so disappointing that the brewer hadn’t brought more hops with her. My big hope for this festival dampened by a lack of courage and ambition. Not all of us like bland boring beers.
|
| Hook Norton - Jackpot | 3.80 | | Egg and cheese mayo sandwich on the aroma. Not too good to be honest, but some Hook Norton yeast character does save it somewhat. |
14 Feb 2009 (Ian)
At least the bar staff weren't wearing fancy dress. Had a half but had to leave quickly as my train was due.
| Coach House - Cromwells | 4.00 | | Fine, decent brown bitter. |
02 Nov 2005 (Ian)
Fairly empty on an early Wednesday evening. 10 handpumps with 8 beers from the Autumn festival plus Pedigree and Incubus (again!!!!!) To be honest if it wasn't for the fact that this was slap bang next to the train station I wouldn't go out of my way to visit it.
| Marstons - Wicked Witch | 4.60 | | Chestnut colour with very thin bubbly beige head. Slightly yeasty nose. Some caramel, some fragrant hop. slightly sour in mouth with drying hop finish and more yeast. Fine. Good finish. In fact middle and end are better than the start |
| Shepherd Neame - Kent's Best | 4.10 | | Deep copper colour with bubbly off white head. Nice yeasty hop aroma. Finish is rather stunning. Very drying, almost dessicating hop, bit thin in mouth the the rest is good. Touch of caramel malt. Hops on end are a bit of a revelation |
16 Sep 2005 (Ian)
Busy Wetherspoons next to Maidstone East station. Only had a bottle of Red Lion beer from New Zealand as none of the draught beers inspired me. However, enjoyed people watching out of the window

12 Aug 2005 (Ian)
Pub number 3 for me and Andrew. After looking at the beer line up at Muggletons and the Druid's Arms, we ended up here for a pint and something to drink. Usual Wetherspoons range plus a couple or 3 guests. Pub is on ground floor of office block just near Maidstone East station.
| Mordue - Workie Ticket | 4.50 | | Had this before, but not tasting like this. Amazing toffee and caramel malt flavours throughout. Excellent beer. |
| Oakham - JHB | 3.80 | | Initially not too bad with typical pale gold colour and grapefruit/tangerine/hop aromas. However, as the pint went down, it was clear that there was something not right. Problem was the diacetyl (buttery/butterscotch aroma or taste). Ruined it. |
12 Aug 2005 (Andrew)
Ian immediately spotted the JHB pump click and ran off to the bar. Fairly busy Friday lunch time in an uninspiring pub.
| Mordue - Workie Ticket | 4.50 | | Caramel brown bitter with lovely deep toffee and caramel flavours. |
| Oakham - JHB | 3.80 | | Tasted of diacetyl (and new word that Ian taught me) |
| Marstons - Burton Bitter | 3.80 | Not Tried | |
19 Mar 2005 (Ian)
By Maidstone East, this Wetherspoons is set in the quadrangle formed by office blocks. Some seating outside in good weather and lots of glass gives this pub an airy feeling even though it is surrounded by buildings. Up to 4 guest beers and usual Wetherspoons range
| Rebellion - Zebedee | 4.70 | | Golden beer. Bit fruity with goodish hops |
| Orkney - Raven | 3.80 | Not Tried | |
