02 Sep 2010 (Ray)
Busy.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Deeside - Brude3.50AcceptableNot much going on in this lightweight, golden, summer ale. Improved as it 'breathed' warmed up. Probably 2* really.
Burnside - M-Pire5.20Not TriedI won't rate this as it was the bottom of the cask. Shouldn't have been served really. Hazy with floaters.
20 Aug 2010 (McGargle)
Mostly regulars.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Orkney - Raven3.80PoorLittle aroma. Thin with metallic hints mid-mouth. Unpleasant, slightly astringent finish. CBoB Bronze Award? Not on this form.
Orkney - Red McGregor4.10PoorThis was an odd one. No hints of summer fruits here just booming tannic aroma and flavours of red wine - strong autumn fruits. Think cheap Shiraz and you're close.
Timothy Taylor's - Landlord4.30UndrinkableUllage. Willingly replaced but it shouldn't have left the bar in this condition.
01 Aug 2010 (Ray)
On a damp day it was still busy. Beers a tad cold??
BeerABVScoreNotes
Kelburn - Pivo Estivo3.90GoodStraw coloured with floral hoppy aroma. Initial tastes of grapefruit and citrus fruits with long dry finish. Needs a little added sweetness from the malt to become an excellent summer ale.
Timothy Taylor's - Landlord4.30AcceptableA little tired.
Deeside - Lulach4.00AcceptableThin and bland. Maybe 2.1/2* really.
Angus Ales - Driver Dark4.40Not TriedA stout.
Inveralmond - Dunottar4.20Not Tried
Caledonian - Deuchars IPA3.80Not Tried
28 Jul 2010 (McGargle)
Quiet in the drizzle. Both ales were a bit cold.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Timothy Taylor's - Landlord4.30GoodGood.
Inveralmond - Dunottar4.20GoodCopper coloured it has that typical flinty Inveralmond character supplemented with good fruit and hops. Long hoppy finish. I'm guessing it's a blend (Ossians/Thrappledouser) possibly dry hopped.

Busy. But why do smokers need to block the main entrance? I'd really rather not plough through their fumes to get to the bar.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Timothy Taylor's - Landlord4.30GoodI'd agree with McGargle. When nothing else appeals there's always TT.

Well, there I was hoping to taste how Burnside 3-Bullz had improved and it had sold out. Cask gone in 36 hours!! Really popular according to bar staff. White Rhino due soon.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Timothy Taylor's - Landlord4.30GoodFaithful standby.
Inveralmond - Lia Fail4.70Not Tried
Angus Ales - Gowfer's Gold3.80Not TriedTwice bitten with Angus Ales I'm reluctant to try again.
17 Jul 2010 (McGargle)
Very busy. Two bar staff were overwhelmed and would have appreciated some help. Sadly, Brew Dog's 5am Saint had been and gone.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Burnside - 3-Bullz3.80GoodWell crafted traditional English bitter. Attractive orange/brown with good creamy head. Malt and hops well balanced and will be even better tomorrow when excess carbon dioxide will have vented.
Angus Ales - Mashie Niblick4.20PoorNearly 1*. Poured mid-brown, head quickly collapsed to nothing. Don't know how this is made but aroma and flavour reminiscent of malt extract home brews. No balance, no hops, nothing to commend. Most went over the harbour wall.
Inveralmond - Lia Fail4.70Not Tried
04 Jul 2010 (Ray)
Busy. Mostly drinkers.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Timothy Taylor's - Landlord4.30ExcellentWell balanced hops against a biscuity base.
Caledonian - Deuchars IPA3.80PoorI'd heard from others that Deuchars had improved recently so thought I'd give it a try. Golden in the glass some slight hop on the nose. Mouthfeel was thin and the malt had a harsh edge. Little in the way of hops to disturb its passage. Hints of antiseptic in the finish. So any improvement? Well, I couldn't taste it. This was just another insubstantial golden ale.

Beautiful evening to enjoy the views from the harbour wall. On a night like this there can be few better places to enjoy a pint.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Timothy Taylor's - Golden Best3.50GoodTaylor's yeast on the nose and subtle floral flavours. Will be better tomorrow after venting for another 24 hours.
Angus Ales - Gowfer's Gold3.80PoorGolden ale. Totally unbalanced with harsh and clashing flavours. Even at 3.8% seemed thin.

BeerABVScoreNotes
Brew Dog - The Physics5.00Excellent4.1/2*. Dark amber, booming resinous, fruity hops with long satisfying finish.
Caledonian - Mild Mayhem3.50PoorThin in the glass and mouth. Dominated by cocoa powder - not much else.
Arran - Clyde Puffer4.50Not TriedShould have tried this. Didn't realise it was a stout. Good case for tasting notes on the bar blackboard.

Late afternoon and very busy. Lively atmosphere with people enjoying the crack. Even in hard times good pubs do well.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Mordue - Workie Ticket4.50AcceptableServed colder than I would like. Coming to the end of the cask the malty flavour and full body dominated.
Houston Brewing Company - Killellan3.70AcceptableI remember this as a floral, lightly hopped beer. Today it was nondescript.
20 Sep 2009 (Ray)
Been coming here since the halcyon days when Stewart managed the bar and cellar and The Marine, quite rightly, won its first CAMRA Scottish Pub of The Year. Nowadays, the beer selection is not quite so eclectic concentrating, as it does, on Scottish micros but this is compensated for by the excellent bottled beer list and interesting kegs.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brew Dog - 77 Lager4.90ExcellentSparkling in the glass and in the mouth this tastes like Martin Dickie's interpretation of a classic Czech beer - "tankova" Pilsner Urquell would be a good current comparison. Dark gold in colour with a long lasting creamy head it looked terrific. Aroma and taste matched and, served at cellar temperature, it was MUCH better than the bottled version.

13 Sep 2009 (McGargle)
Very busy late evening. Quick, friendly service - just wish we didn't have to fight through drinkers standing/sitting at the bar. You'd think they'd get fed up with being jostled but apparently not.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brew Dog - Punk IPA6.00GoodMuch better than the last sample. Full on hoppy aromas carried through to the taste balance by plenty of malt for mouthfeel.
27 Aug 2009 (McGargle)
Walk in the sea air, a swim for the dog and a beer for me. What could be better?
BeerABVScoreNotes
York - Guzzler3.60ExcellentLight orange with a tight but fading head. Bitter fruit aromas carried forward to the taste. Good balance for a bitter bitter. Well brewed and well served.
Brew Dog - Punk IPA6.00PoorOne of my favourite beers but off form tonight. Initial slightly acetic aroma faded to a unique North Indian curry smell. Harsh flavours subsided to give hints of what the beer should be. Either first pint of the day or, more likely, past its best.
Orkney - Dark Island4.60Not TriedOthers were enjoying it.
12 Aug 2009 (McGargle)
Same beers as last visit except DIPA had replaced Nechtan.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Arran - Sunset4.40PoorHazy with unpleasant eggy/butyric acid aromas (not H2S) carried through to the taste. Problem in the brew not the cellar. First tasting since the brewery returned from administration. Not impressed.
Timothy Taylor's - Landlord4.30PoorGreen.

05 Aug 2009 (McGargle)
Lovely evening to sit on the harbour wall with a glass. Sailors, kayakers and sea cadets all busy but more importantly The Marine fridge was restocked with Belgian ales from Boon, Cantillon etc.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Timothy Taylor's - Landlord4.30ExcellentOn the top of its form tonight. Excellent balance of malt and hops with 'we're brewing' aromas. I like hop bombs on occasions but this was the classic British pint.

23 Jul 2009 (McGargle)
There can be few finer places to enjoy to enjoy a glass of fine ale on a sunny afternoon than The Marine's harbour wall. That the ale was followed by the last bottle of Boon's Oude Geuze was perfect.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Cairngorm - Trade Winds4.30Good'S funny how beers evolve over time. This was darker and more malty than earlier brews and lacked the citrus/elderflower attack that was its trademark. Still a fine beer though served in good condition.
20 Jun 2009 (McGargle)
Very busy after the rugby on TV>
