Tasting Summary

These comments are the opinion of the individual reviewer and represent what they thought of the beer on a particular day in a particular pub. If a review is less favourable, it may be because the beer suffered somewhere in the supply chain between them and the brewery.

Hogan SamplingExcellent04 Jul 2026 1st beer of this visit: Came with very good head and lasting lacing on this best bitter first brewed in the summer of 1995 in a modest 5-barrel plant located in a brickworks shed behind The Pot Kiln pub in Frilsham, Berkshire, before relocating to West Berkshire Brewery which then became Renegade Brewery in 2022, and at a state-of-the-art facility at The Old Dairy, in Yattendon, Berkshire. A very dry fruited first bite from this reddish-chestnut amber bitter. A sweet biscuity maltiness rising mixed with light caramel emanating from its Maris Otter malted barley. A fruited bitterness doing battle with subtle fruity, earthy hop notes of blackberry, plum, and the odd dried fruit for good measure from fruity British hops, Bramling Cross and Northdown. A definite red berry fruitiness emerging for me. A dry bitterness sailing out with the odd fruited note waving. Served in superb nick and as recommended by a fellow local.

Hogan SamplingGood28 Feb 2026 1st beer of this visit: Just a sample and to follow my visit to the Pangbourne Club where it was in its keg version. Displaying a good head with its lacing lasting on this copper gold-coloured best bitter and first brewed in 1995 when it was formerly produced by West Berkshire Brewery. A fruited malty first hit. A hoppy bitterness rising with hints of citrus, floral and pine flavours from its Bramling Cross and Northdown hops. A sweet maltiness joining in from its Maris Otter malted barley lending it a caramelised biscuity flavouring. An infusion of hedgerow fruit flavours including red and black berries tantalising my taste buds. A dry fruited bitterness sailing out.

Hogan SamplingGood19 Oct 2024 Came with head and some lacing. But this soon evaporated and so multiple decanting became necessary for the other two served. It was fresh on today. A very malty and slightly sweet mouthfeel with a dry, bitter aftertaste.
