| Hogan Sampling | ![]() | 19 Sep 2026 | 2nd beer of this visit: Served with a creamy top on this collaborative pastry stout brewed by the UK's Brew York, founded in 2016 in a refurbished 19th-century warehouse in the historic Walmgate area of York, and Norway's Amundsen Brewery* and as part of Brew York's 10th Birthday Series. Inspired by the work of Norwegian artist and illustrator, Theodor Kittelse, 1857–1914, one of Norway’s influential Neo-Romantic artists, famous for shaping the visual identity of Norwegian folklore and defining how generations imagine the hidden, supernatural world of Scandinavia. The sweet lactose, marshmallow and chocolate balances a gentle smokiness to represent dark forests and folklore. The physical brewing, fermentation, canning and packaging took place at Brew York’s state-of-the-art main facility in Osbaldwick, York. Amundsen Brewery, considered European masters of the ultra-thick, dessert-like pastry stout, contributed their exact brewing recipe to the process. A sweet bitter first hit. A chocolatey maltiness rising with hints of toasted marsh mallows and biscuit. A bitter hoppiness in on the mix of malted barley, lactose milk, Juniper and Vanilla. Its Maris Otter Pale Malt adding a rich, bready touch, Chocolate Malt and Roasted Barley aiding the bittersweet physical dark chocolate and espresso flavours, Biscuit/Amber Malt behind its biscuitiness, and Smoked Malt aiding a lingering smokiness, alongside flaked oats and malted wheat lending a thick mouthfeel. Pleasantly bitter with a hint of chocolate on its outflow with a hint of smokiness. Its likely hops, Magnum or Columbus, aiding bittering, its traditional English Hops, Fuggles/East Kent Goldings, providing an earthy and herbal flavouring to compete with the vanilla and chocolate, and US varieties, Willamette or Mt. Hood, offering a faint floral and woodsy touch. Served in superb nick. *Amundsen Brewery was founded in 2011 and originally set up as a small city-centre brewpub in the heart of Oslo, Norway. |
