Tasting Summary

These comments are the opinion of the individual reviewer and represent what they thought of the beer on a particular day in a particular pub. If a review is less favourable, it may be because the beer suffered somewhere in the supply chain between them and the brewery.

The Archibald Simpson, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire

RayGood29 Jan 2010 Less complex than on 24th. Probably a little tired but still the best of the evening.
RayGood24 Jan 2010 Pulled deep ruby red with long lasting dark beige head. Well judged smoky aromas and taste backed up with coffee and liquorice. Long, hoppy finish to a well crafted and unusual porter.

BlairExceptional07 Feb 2009 Wow, wow, wow. Oh, and wow. This beer is amazing. So rich and fruity, with lots of chocolate and malt. I had 3 pints.

IanGood16 Jan 2008 In pretty good condition, but from what the barman said, I think it was coming towards the end of the barrel. Smoke, dry tar, choccy porter. It's pretty good, but not perfect.

IanExcellent12 Jan 2008 A lot to live up to as I have a very idealistic view of this beer. And to be honest it doesn't let me down. Lovely spicy old ale. Perfumed lovely roasted flavours, great beer, with nice choc powder too.

The Samuel Peto, Folkestone, Kent

IanExcellent17 May 2006 Black beer with thick bubbly beige lasting head. Porter is such an under made and under appreciated style, every brewery should make one and brew it on a regular basis, it's a great style. And this is an interesting version. Odd burst of hops on aroma. You expect roast malt/choc/coffee or sour liquorice, but it's choc hop instead. In mouth there's liquorice and choc and then tight hop bite on the end with more liquorice. Interesting hop/liquorice/choc balance.

Okell's Aile

4.80% ABV.

This is a smoked Celtic porter, with an initial sweet flavour leading to a full-bodied silky-smooth liquorice on the palate and a bitter hop finish.

We have tried this beer 8 times.

We have given this beer an average score of Good to Excellent.
