Tasting Summary

These comments are the opinion of the individual reviewer and represent what they thought of the beer on a particular day in a particular pub. If a review is less favourable, it may be because the beer suffered somewhere in the supply chain between them and the brewery.

The Lodge, Alsager, Cheshire

Nick WillisNot Tried13 May 2013 I couldn't tell as this had a shared clip so may have been on keg.

The Harp, Charing Cross, Central London

WittendenGood02 Mar 2013 Black and smooth, but a bit one dimensional for this brewery , I felt, but it had been a long day...

IanGood11 Apr 2010 I was extolling the virtues of this last night over Guiness, then it goes and lets me down by being not in the best of condition. Still the roasted malts are excellent.

Martin the MildmanExcellent31 Dec 2009 Just a little sweeter than Espresso with a fuller more rounded flavour that just gives it the edge. My score 17/20.

The Butchers Arms, Herne, Kent

BlairExcellent18 Aug 2009 Quite a subtle stout really, roasted malt with a bit of chocolate and ever so slightly smoky.
KenExcellent04 Aug 2009 Somebody suggested that Stout was a woman's drink. Hope the head's better this morning

IanGood01 Apr 2009 Good bitterness on finish from the roasted malts, bit of dry charcoal too.
KenExcellent31 Mar 2009 A rich almost plum and dark fruit flavoured stout with just the right edge of bitterness. The second pint is even better.

The Criterion, Leicester, Leicestershire

StuExcellent22 May 2009 Black in colour, with a bitter chocolate and roasted malt flavour and a dry finish.

The Evening Star, Brighton, East Sussex

IanExcellent20 Mar 2009 Very good dry stout. Very drinkable, lots of fruit as well as dry dark roasted malts. Good dryness, charcoal, touch of hop on the finish. I really like it. I'm not much of a dark beer drinker, but this was extremely good I thought. Good carbonation and the dark fruits really make it. What an Irish dry stout should be I guess. Very likeable beer.

BlairGood06 Mar 2009 Certainly a good beer, but I was expecting a little more from a stout by Dark Star. Roasted malt and a little chocolate but a little thin in the mouth and not particularly strong flavoured.
DubbelExcellent06 Mar 2009 Still a top stout and what Guiness can only aspire to be.
DubbelNot Tried16 Jan 2009
DubbelExcellent03 Jan 2009 Now labelled 'Traditional Sussex Stout' and a permanent brew for 2009. Oaty and wholesome with some liquorice notes and grassy hops. Cracking.
