Allegedly one of the five cosiest pubs of England, due to COVID regulations and the bar being full, we sat outside and enjoyed our beers on an increasingly cloudy and chilly lunchtime.

Lunchtime on a windy Tuesday.A similar clientel to our last visit, with a few more walkers.I first came here in 1975 or 76,it being one of a very few pubs selling cask beer in Co. Durham.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Black Sheep - Best Bitter3.80ExcellentI'm not sure what they've done with this beer, but it was delicious:luscious yet gritty.

A largely middle aged clientele, together with a table of young mums and their babies and dogs.We sat by the window in the pannelled bar on an October Tuesday lunchtime.

Fairly quiet on a cloudy Wednesday lunchtime. The bar seems larger, as they have knocked through into an adjoining room.Pleasantly old world.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Black Sheep - Reaper4.10ExcellentRed ale, enthusiastically packed with Yankee hops, including Summit, which apparently has to be hand picked as there aren't (or weren't) any machines for picking dwarf hops in the US.What larks.
Black Sheep - Best Bitter3.80GoodI often overlook this, but on form it is a fairly flavoursome Yorkshire bitter, the gritty side of malty.
Thwaites - Wainwright (please now use the Banks's entry)4.10Not Tried
25 Oct 2009 (Wittenden)
A smart hotel with a cosy bar, attracting locals and visitors.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Black Sheep - Best Bitter3.80AcceptableNot my favourite beer, but well kept, and presenting that bittersweet edge that gets me behind my eyes.
Theakston - Best Bitter3.80Not TriedWas planning on trying this, having seen that it has been repatriated to Masham, but a local returned his, saying it wasn't right.
