30 Nov 2014 (Stephen Harris)
Late-afternoon visit. In my experience this pub is always busy, but not today. Could it be anything to do with the fact that Sunday roast dinner weighed in at £16?
BeerABVScoreNotes
St Austell - Saint Nich's Festive Ale4.50GoodChestnut-coloured. Rich fruit and spice, the latter not overdone. Tasting notes mention marmalade, and they’re right.

BeerABVScoreNotes
Nethergate (was Nethergate Growler for a while then name reverted) - Lamplighter Amber Beer (exclusively for Nicholson's)4.80AcceptableMore of a ruby colour, a dark bitter with a bitter malty flaovur but little hop character. Dry, astringent finish. My score 13/20.
23 Jun 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Got a seat so not too busy late on a Saturday afternoon.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Thwaites - Sunshine & Lollihops4.60GoodActually 4.6%. Well balanced pale strong bitter. My score 15/20.
31 Dec 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
My last pub visit of 2011.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Moor - Amoor4.50GoodFormerly named Peat Porter. Quite a lot of bitter flavours in this from both roast malt and hops. The finish is quite dry. My score 15/20.
06 Sep 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Unusually quiet on a Tuesday evening.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Leeds - Monsoon4.80GoodNow beefed up with a higher ABV, this is an IPA style beer with a high malt and hop flavour, toffee malt competing against bitter hop for dominance. The finish is quite dry. My score 15/20.
Brentwood - Pacific Pale Ale4.70PoorUnfortunately past its best here, was probably a good hoppy beer in its prime. My score 9/20 with C for quality.
14 Jun 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
BeerABVScoreNotes
Moor - Northern Star4.10AcceptablePale bitter brewed solely with citra hops. Little in the way of malt backup, so a very sharp, bitter citrus hop flavour. My score 14/20.
09 Jan 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Very quiet early doors on a Sunday lunchtime. Had a roast lunch in here which was quite acceptable.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Adnams - Old Ale4.10ExcellentVery pleasant smooth and well rounded mild style ale with toffee malt and some fruitiness present. My score 16/20.
14 Dec 2010 (Martin the Mildman)
BeerABVScoreNotes
Sharp's - Cornish Stout4.30ExcellentVery dark ruby/black stout with good bitter roast malt flavour and a little hoppiness to give a dry finish. My score 16/20.
