Early evening. Good heritage features - but rather spoiled I thought by the large, modern plain glass windows that made the main bar very bright. 2 other ales on.

Just before noon and packed with football supporters. I noticed that the price of a breakfast was well under the £3 barrier.

Just after the arrival of our train from London at 10:21 a large group of us met up here as the first stop on a pub crawl of Merseyside, Cheshire and Shropshire. Thankfully the service was very much better than on Mr. Croxford's last visit, I was very impressed with the architecture in this place and especially liked the bell pushes in the rear room.

12:00 47 minutes before the train so came here for a beer. Reasonably busy with late breakfasters. Service was appalling. Stood waiting for my first pint as the barmaid put out menus at a snail's pace. Equally long wait for second pint then a bloke who had just walked up to the bar got served before me. Red rag to a bull. Empty glass on bar, turned heel and went to Wetherspoons over the road.

17:30 visit. Fair crowd in. With one pal departed for home, we called in here and took advantage of a two-for-one meal deal, and sat in the large, and very ornate backroom. A current 2013 gbg entry and 9 times previous in 1999/2003-10/2.

14:30 visit. First time here. Busy with locals in this fine old building with an interior of particular note. One of many of the City's historic, well preserved pubs. Ale range not so noteworthy...

The interior is spectacular Victorian plasterwork and wood panelling, but it has never been my favourite pub in Liverpool. 10 handpumps with 4 on. My first pub in Liverpool on this trip and within 5 minutes two scallies were trying to flog knocked off perfume. I am home.

Heineken - John Smith's Bitter (a.k.a. Cask and Original)3.80PoorServed a bit on the cold side, but this has an odd yeast aroma and I wasn't that impressed with it. Cheap though.
