This pub re-opened on Thursday. Surprisingly little has changed. Much of the lovely breweriana has gone. There is a new pool table in the front bar. The yard has been beautified. There is no sign of the usual faces. Most obvious change is significant price increases.
BeerABVScoreNotes
East London (ELB) - Cowcatcher4.80ExcellentA significantly hoppy pint.
East London (ELB) - Nightwatchman4.50GoodA good quality dark Bitter.

Just passing through at around 9pm and the pub is almost empty.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brodie's (latterly contract brewed by Rhymney) - Bethnal Green Bitter4.00GoodIt is easy to forget that Brodie’s ordinary Bitter is a very good example of the style.

Pretty quiet in here on the evening after a Bank Holiday. This pub once had a reputation for selling far too many cask beers for the number of customers and not keeping an eye on quality. I thought they had grown out of that – but tonight the old problems had resurfaced.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brodie's (latterly contract brewed by Rhymney) - London Fields Pale Ale4.00AcceptableA new version of this beer predominately hopped with Mosaic. I thought it tasted a bit insipid. The next customer had a glass full of dregs and it went off sale.
Brodie's (latterly contract brewed by Rhymney) - Hoxton Special IPA6.60PoorRare to see this one in cask. But what started out tasting a bit odd increasingly tasted ‘off’ as I went down the glass and I did not finish my pint.

Brodie's (latterly contract brewed by Rhymney) - Cherry Mild3.60ExcellentA very dark beer with initially subtle cherry flavours.
Brodie's (latterly contract brewed by Rhymney) - Culture Shock5.80GoodBlimey, a pale ESB, complete with sticky caramel flavours. You don’t come across this sort of thing every day.

Early evening and busy. Superb pub one of my favourites in this area, a proper London boozer. I've only listed the beer I've drunk.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brodie's (latterly contract brewed by Rhymney) - Citra3.10ExcellentLight floral hoppy and in superb condition.

Brodies have been keeping a pretty low profile recently and, I gather, brewing most of their beer in faraway South Wales. So good to see them launching four new/revived beers tonight across their three pub estate.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brodie's (latterly contract brewed by Rhymney) - English Pale Ale4.50ExcellentPale gold in colour. Great, earthy, English hop flavours.
Brodie's (latterly contract brewed by Rhymney) - Simcoe Pale Ale5.00ExcellentPale gold. Intensely hoppy in the way Brodie’s do so well.
Brodie's (latterly contract brewed by Rhymney) - Kentish Town Brown IPA5.50ExcellentA new recipe for this dark beer, at a lower strength. Really good I thought.
Brodie's (latterly contract brewed by Rhymney) - Mosaic Pale Ale5.00GoodPale and hop-filled, although suffering a bit from flat condition.

Mid to late evening. This is always a good place to catch up with all the football gossip ahead of a Leyton Orient home match.

A very pleasant night here – a gathering of all eight past and present editors of the Leyton Orientear fanzine, of which I am one. Unfortunately, not all beer shone tonight, but the conversation did.

The pub is found in Leyton, Greater London, E10 6AE.

Community local in the Bakers Arms area of Leyton, in High Road Leyton, with a large comfortable dark wooden interior. The pub was present here by 1855 and was acquired by Charrington’s Brewery from Truman’s in 1870 – in later years it passed to Ind Coope. It was rebuilt as we know it today in 1897, on a slightly smaller site than its predecessor. Used to be famous for a good selection of Brodie's beer which were brewed in the former stable block to the rear. Sold on and the brewery has been relocated outside London. Refurbished and reopened under new ownership in late-May 2018. Reported late 2022 no long selling real ale. 2023 reported back selling real ale.

We have visited this pub 54 times, seen 131 different beers and tried 82 of them.
