Visits Details

10 Nov 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Very quiet on a Saturday lunchtime.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Triple fff - Jabberwocky5.00AcceptableDark brown strong bitter with a bitter citrus hop character. Some dark malt flavour. My score 14/20 with B for quality as served too cold and lacking condition.
Art Brew - Hip Hop Dr Rudi's Super Alpha4.30AcceptableVery pale bitter with a new hop variety. Bitter with some citrus notes. My score 14/20 with B for quality as served too cold and lacking condition.
04 Sep 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Early evening on a Tuesday and the place was deserted apart from two other punters and the staff.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Art Brew - Lemongrass & Bobek3.20AcceptableVery pale and hoppy with a grassy hop flavour. A little sharp for my taste. My score 13/20.
30 May 2012 (Stephen Harris)
My first visit to this large pub. No sign of the forthcoming in-house brewery. Although six handpumps held clips, it seemed that only one handpumped beer was available, the others all coming from the stillage to the rear. In all, nine beers were available; I did not note all their names. We tried several between us and overall were rather disappointed with the quality.
BeerABVScoreNotes
London Fields - Gold4.90GoodIn good condition from the handpump. A highly hopped, golden ale.
Branscombe (was Branscombe Vale) - Mild3.70PoorA sweet, black mild. Warm, flat, lifeless and near tasteless from the stillage.
Milestone - Classic Dark Mild4.00Not TriedI nearly ordered this, but a fellow drinker warned that it was ‘on the turn’.
01 Dec 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Scottish ales festival in progress.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Orkney (Sinclair) - Northern Light4.00GoodWell balanced light ale with some hop bitterness and a little biscuity malt. My score 15/20.
Orkney (Sinclair) - Golden Amber (Atlas range)4.50GoodHoppy but well balanced beer that has a dryish hoppy finish. My score 15/20.
Adnams - New Zealand Pale Ale4.00GoodGood gooseberry flavoured hop notes from Nelson Sauvin hops giving a tart fruity flavour. Dryish, hoppy finish. My score 15/20.
Orkney (Sinclair) - Dark Island4.60AcceptableRather tired sample, roast malt but little else to back it up with a rather vineous finish. My score 14/20 with B for quality.
Swannay (formerly Highland) - Dark Munro4.00PoorRegrettably this sample was not up to the usual standard, having a tainted flavour of medicinal type. My score 11/20.
