This month's venue for our Friday Evening Group, fairly busy as expected for a Friday late afternoon, we took over the left hand corner as more arrived during the course of the evening.

12:25 Visited to see if enough old fittings left to qualify as a CAMRA Heritage pub. Marginal. Good selection of beers. We were the first in, six others when we left an hour later.

Crowded in here in the run-up to evening football at Griffin Park. I know many of them, including friends who have travelled from as far away as Cornwall and Yorkshire to be here this-evening to see if Leyton Orient can continue their sensational early-season winning form.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Twickenham (also uses sub-brand Old Hands) - Yakima Valley ABA4.80ExcellentFull-bodied, verging on heavy, well-hopped, US-style brown ale.
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Steelmaker5.00ExcellentVery pale and sharp.
Hop Back - Redsell's EKG3.90GoodStraightforward English bitter, with a tinge of redness to the colour.

A ‘Meet the Brewer’ session with Weird Beard Brew Co., and the brewers are suitably easy to spot with their distinctive facial hair. The pub is packed for the event. Like several people present, I waited patiently for the special beer to come on before finally realising that it was there all along, un-noticed on the keg fonts.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Windsor & Eton - Canberra4.00GoodA bit of everything in this one. Full-bodied sweetish malt with some fruitiness and some good hops too.
Buxton - Rednik Stout4.10GoodA hoppy stout that is ultimately dominated by roast/burnt malt tastes.
Weird Beard - Shark Biscuit7.40GoodBrewed in collaboration with London Brewing Co and served by old school keg dispense. The pub was full of beer geeks cupping the beer to warm it and swishing it around to de-gas. It is a strong, golden-coloured, slightly hazy IPA with a fruitiness from Australian hops.

Busy in here at around 6pm, but three efficient bar staff meant waiting time was minimal.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Cheddar - Festive Totty4.50ExcellentA porter style beer fortified with port. Dark and chocolaty, with winey notes. Tasted stronger than 4.5%.
Goody Ales - Bleangate Brewery - Genesis3.50AcceptableA disappointing, very ordinary, rather bland, brown bitter. Given the complimentary tasting notes here from other drinkers, I assume this must have been in some way a duff pint.

Busy with a visit from the Thursday night mild drinkers.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Kissingate - Black Cherry Mild4.20ExcellentDoaes what it says, strong but not overpowering cherry flavour and chocolate malt for balance. My score 16/20.
Mallinsons - Mount Pleasant Mild3.70AcceptableBlack in colour but not very mild, more of a black bitter with high hop bitterness. Some roast malt in the finish. My score 13/20.
10 Feb 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
A visit to this revitalised pub from the Thursday evening mild drinkers saw a good selection of milds on for us.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Dark Star - Over The Moon3.80ExcellentThe citrussy hoppiness of the base Hophead is tempered by the roast and caramel dark malt flavours to give a refreshingly different modern take on a mild beer. My score 16/20.
Whitehaven - Darkest Ennerdale4.20ExcellentBrewery name seems to be Ennerdale as well now. This was a smooth and malty mild with low hopping. My score 16/20.
Rudgate - Ruby Mild4.40GoodA reasonably good sample of this bitter mild with some maltiness evident in this. My score 15/20.

Good pub on Brentford High Street. U shaped bar with seating, TV and Thai food on one side and more seating plus bar billiards on the other. Friendly service. Just slightly tatty around the edges. Exterior is very attractive though compared with the rest of the High Street. Pump clips line the walls of guest beers served and a running total is kept on the chalk board that shows the beers available. After attending a course in Maidenhead, I stayed at a Travelodge just up the road from here. Early evening and I enjoyed the Thai food and then the UEFA cup final whilst trying the beers.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Paulaner - Hefeweissbier5.30ExcellentCloudy gold with thin white head. Again, great to see this on draught. Wheat, banana, clove, lemon aroma. Sharp lemon finish. Cool, refreshing but cereal in mouth gives it depth and body, whilst the banana and lemon lift it and make it sing. Good fun.
Brouwerij Moortgat - Maredsous 88.00ExcellentI have not seen this on tap before. Now this I like. Very dark brown/ruby with thick lasting off white head. Lots of fruit on the aroma, including damsons and plums. More sour damson in mouth, but it's jammy and full with a dry finish. Really good in mouth with sweet chocolate, full feel, and sour all at the same time. Wonderful
Hogs Back - Hop Garden Gold4.40GoodGolden beer with thin white head. Yeast, hop aroma, biscuit malt, orange fruit. Really drinkable. Tad of stale malt and dusty hop on finish. Citrus is good. I like this, its summery
Paulaner - Original4.90AcceptableGold colour, carbonated, thin white head. Some hop, some dead malt on aroma, thinnish in mouth, bit metallic. Dry hop on end. It's alright.
Downton - Chimera Quadhop3.90AcceptableGolden, lasting white head. It's ok, some good hop on end. Aroma needs work though. Bit sickly. But finish is really good and tangy with the hop
Hogs Back - Dark Mild3.40AcceptableDark ruby with thin beige head. Does what it says on the tin. It's mild, drinkable, some juicy dark malts, toffee, but the flavours are subdued. Old fashioned mild. You could drink pints of this and not notice. More toffee and coffee on end with minimum dry powder. Depends what you want. Fine, but not exciting.

The pub is found in Brentford, Greater London, TW8 8EW.

In the High Street, very attractive mock-Tudor exterior to this pub which is not far from the river. Central bar serves several real ales, ciders and perries through 8 handpumps and a large selection of UK bottle conditioned beers, plus a couple of continental beers on draught and a selection of continental beers in bottle. Thai food served and to take away. Closure followed which was expected to be terminal but has re-opened in spring 2019 against all the odds.

We have visited this pub 11 times, seen 55 different beers and tried 32 of them.
