I’ve been asked to lead a Hackney pub crawl for a group of visiting Notts County supporters, in town for the game at Brisbane Road. We start here and I have a group of 19 waiting outside for 11am opening. The pub soon fills behind us with hungry breakfasters.

I am leading a ‘Brewed in Hackney’ walk for about 15 members of the local CAMRA Branch. The idea is to try a beer this-evening from each of Hackney’s five breweries. We get off to a good start here. Apparently it is now advised to book two weeks in advance if you want to eat here in the evening.

The food operation at this pub is proving highly successful and every table was booked last night, with potential customers being turned away at 8pm. Beer quality from the in-house brewery is looking pretty good too.

There are sweet malts and liquorice, but the overriding flavour is a woody, winey, smokiness. If I was told it had been aged in a wooden barrel I would have believed it – but apparently it hasn’t. This has the makings of a truly great beer. |

This pub continues to develop, with the kitchen now complete and the menu, featuring a ‘smoked meat barbeque’ now available. Smells great, but all tables booked tonight. I was early anyway, before it got busy. Disappointing lack of home-brew today.

Just a quick visit on the way to watch football. I notice that the pub has had an external lick of paint since my last visit – and that all the signage names the pub as Duke’s, rather than Duke of York.

Very early days for this brew-pub. The ‘Pale Ale’ has already sold out due to “unexpectedly high demand” – more is on the way.

The pub is found in Hackney, Greater London, N1 5AA.
Formerly the Duke of York, this pub re-opened in February 2012 after around four years of closure. An intimate atmosphere from a low-budget refurbishment. Initially it was home to the 4-barrel Beavertown Brewery, with the main brewing equipment visible in the bar area and the fermentation tanks in the cellar. The need for more space soon saw the brewery kit move out, although the pub remains the Tap for Beavertown Brewery. Closed suddenly in December 2017 after a decision taken by Beavertown Brewery that the venue no longer fitted with the brewery's business profile. Re-opened July 2018 with a renaming. Renamed back to its original name and re-opened in October 2019 but with no real ale.
