Unusually quiet in here on a Sunday evening and I took advantage of the lack of waiting time for a pizza to indulge myself.
Crate - Chocolate Orange Stout6.50ExcellentThis was one of my favourite beers tried at the recent Pig’s Ear Beer Festival and it was nice to savour a whole pint of it in more relaxed surroundings.
Cloudwater - A-W18 One-off ESB 5.50ExcellentHazy brown in colour. More evidence of Cloudwater’s return to cask beer production. This is a robust Bitter with a lot of hop in the nose and a mostly malty flavour.

Early-evening and comfortably busy with little queuing at the bar.
Pressure Drop - Orla3.80ExcellentI’ve heard good things about this beer and was pleased to see it here. Served from key-keg. It is a refreshing beer; herbal and fruity and tart. Very nice.
Crate - Belgian Pale 4.80AcceptableThis beer seems to come in various strengths and tonight was advertised as 5%. I found it a bit bland and did not note the flavours I had found in a canned version on a previous visit.

It is spookily empty in here – people have clearly forgotten what to do when it rains.
Crate - Citra Sour3.50GoodFrom key-keg. Cloudy pale gold, mouth-puckeringly sour and hoppy.

As always there is a good crowd here, although nobody brave enough to sit outside.
Crate - Radanas DIPA8.80ExcellentHazy gold. A monster.
Crate - Belgian Pale 4.80GoodPoured from a can. Nutty. A little sweet. Some fruity hops.
Crate - Golden Ale3.80Not Tried

It is unusually quiet in here and we even toy with the idea of ordering a pizza as the waiting time is advertised as just 20 minutes.
Crate - Session IPA3.60GoodLightweight and hoppy.

This pub has expanded into the premises next door since my last visit, more than doubling the inside seating area. This is just as well, as it is a bitterly cold evening and everybody wants to be inside.
Arbor Ales - Boomtown Brown5.30ExcellentArbor have turned their hand to a Brown Ale with their usual aplomb. Hoppy and spicy.
Burning Sky - Plateau3.50Not Tried

Just after lunchtime opening, pleasant airy but trendy atmosphere with plenty of bench seating to absorb customers, which consisted mainly of tattooed men with their hair in buns.
Crate - Session IPA3.60ExcellentFruity hit, mainly peach with an occasional blackcurrant twist. Delicious.
Oakham - Scarlet Macaw4.40Not Tried
Rooster's - Wake Up Call6.50Not Tried
17 May 2017 (Stephen Harris)
Mid-evening on a rainy day. It’s crowded in here, but not with the usual Hipsters and Big-Beards – more of a sporty throng. They’ve been doing something energetic in the Olympic Park and have a huge thirst for beer and hunger for pizza.
Salopian - Bullet Proof5.80ExcellentA strong, golden IPA.
Crate - American Nut Brown5.20ExcellentFrom a keg of some sort. Rich and dark and smooth.
Crate - Session IPA3.60GoodThe cask was misbehaving in some way and the beer foaming and spluttering. Golden in colour, it felt a bit battered by the time a glassful had been squeezed out. Good hoppy tastes though.

Early evening – drizzly and cool. Busy inside, but plenty of space at the outside tables. I note that beer has become rather expensive here.
Crate - Rye5.50AcceptableA nice rye twang, but not as full-bodied as I recall this beer usually to be.

A rainy late afternoon and the Sunday crowds are a bit thinner than usual. I even found a place to sit. My first visit here this year, so this becomes number 21 on my 2017 tour of London breweries and brewery taps.
Crate - Lemon Gose4.40ExcellentOn keg dispense. Golden. Sharp, sour, salty and lemony.
Clouded Minds - Elisir Amber Ale5.30GoodAmber/gold and dominated by bitter hops.

About the Crate Brewery

The pub sign. Crate Brewery, Hackney, Greater London

Summary of Beer Scores

The pub is found in Hackney, Greater London, E9 5EN.

Hackney Wick has seen a transformation from grim area of industrial units to thriving ‘creative’ quarter. Only problem is, all the traditional pubs had closed down. The Crate Brewery was established in July 2012 in a former industrial premises and is a combination of brewpub and pizza restaurant, although with a predominately ‘pub’ feel. There is a large, high-ceilinged room and outside seating (some in boats) beside the canal. Initially the five-barrel brewery kit was visible in a room alongside, but in July 2013 the brewery moved to larger premises nearby. Inside, the furniture is made of recycled packing cases and pallets. It stands literally at the gate of the Olympic Park.

We have visited this pub 42 times, seen 75 different beers and tried 40 of them.
