Early evening to see if anything is left of yesterday’s Cloudwater Brewery tap takeover. I’m here ahead of the crowds.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Deya - What Time Do You Call This? 4.50ExcellentApparently DEYA only brew a cask beer once a year, just to keep their eye in. This rare brew is a cloudy, soft, hoppy, fruity beer.
Cloudwater - Small Chinook El Dorado Pale 2.80GoodNot much Cloudwater beer goes into cask, so this is a bonus. It’s in the cloudy/murky/hoppy style. Good body for its strength.
Cloudwater - Helles Tetnanger 4.80GoodFrom keg. Clear gold and bubbly. Authentic German-style Lager. Clean, malty and refreshing.

Saturday evening. There was a Tap Takeover a few days ago by Ridgeside Brewery and I am pleased to find three of their beers still available in cask.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Ridgeside - Black Night5.00ExcellentA black Oatmeal Stout. Quite sweet – is this just from the oats or is there lactose too?
Ridgeside - Plato Jester3.80ExcellentSingle hop, session series. Black pepper and pine resin on a caramel/toffee base.
Ridgeside - Plato Calypso3.80ExcellentA pale, single-hop beer.

It’s Hop Swap night here and the tap takeover this month is by Black Iris Brewery of Nottingham. I’m stood at the bar with a scattering of friends.

BeerABVScoreNotes
One Mile End Brew Co. (formerly Mulligans at the White Hart and then WH Brew Pub) - Blood Orange Wheat DIPA7.40ExceptionalFantastic to find this beer available in cask format. Reddish-gold in colour. Luscious smell. Gorgeous fruit flavours. Best beer in a while.
Harviestoun - Sorachi Pils4.40ExcellentAn inspired take on a Lager. Pale gold, spritzy in cask. Great hops. Very interesting.

After an afternoon of brewery adventures, I met up with a couple of friends here for a more conventional drink. I failed to note all the cask beers available.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Cromarty - Red Rocker5.00ExcellentA rye beer.
One Mile End Brew Co. (formerly Mulligans at the White Hart and then WH Brew Pub) - Morello Cherry Gose4.20ExcellentFrom keg. Less fizzy than last time I drank this and the lip-smacking cherry qualities are more apparent.
One Mile End Brew Co. (formerly Mulligans at the White Hart and then WH Brew Pub) - Speedy Wilson4.50GoodAn old-fashioned Brown Ale.
12 Mar 2018 (Stephen Harris)
Just time for a couple of quick halves before going to see the RSC’s production of Hamlet, a few doors down the road at the Hackney Empire.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Elusive - Aztec Challenge6.00ExcellentA strong, black Porter, heavily flavoured with chilli. Chilli burn evident from the first sip.

It’s the monthly ‘Holy Cheese Mountain’ night here and the visiting brewery is Verdant (although they have no cask beer). I realise that it will be busy so leave work early and am here by 6:30. It is already packed however and more keep squeezing in, making the pub a bit uncomfortable.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Box Social - Fubsy4.20ExcellentA slightly sweet, black Oatmeal Stout.
Track - El Dorado4.00ExcellentA proper murky, golden hopfest.
Verdant - Track & Field7.20ExcellentFrom key-keg. This is a great, strong, fresh, juicy, US-style IPA
Redemption - Victorian Mild (collaboration with The Kernel)6.00AcceptableDark brown in colour. I don’t enjoy this as much as I was expecting – possibly because it comes immediately after a couple of very hoppy beers.
Gipsy Hill - Bounder4.40Not Tried
13 Jan 2018 (Stephen Harris)
Mid-afternoon on a Sunday is a quiet session here, probably due to the lack of roast lunch provision. I like it quiet. With Maregade Brewery having relocated to larger premises nearby, I understand that Howling Hops are once again brewing some cask beers here.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Five Points - Derailed Porter5.20ExcellentAn excellent, soured and slightly stronger version of the regular Railway Porter. Produced in limited quantities each winter.
Track - Enigma4.00ExcellentA cloudy, golden, single-hopper. Quite distinctive hop tastes.

Very busy in the early evening with people here before an event at the Hackney Empire. Much talk about the pub now accepting plastic payments (formerly strictly a cash-only venue) although I did not see anyone give it a go.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Track - Zaka3.80GoodA fresh and fruity Pale Ale.
New Bristol - 3654.00AcceptableA hazy brown colour. This is a heavily-malty, traditional Best Bitter.

The pub is found in Hackney, Greater London, E8 1EJ.

There was a pub called the Cock in Hackney village as early as the 1650s, and in 1661 it was the venue for ‘Popish Conspirators’, plotting an unsuccessful assassination attempt on King Charles II. Nobody is quite sure if this was the predecessor of today’s pub – but the present pub was certainly around by the 1830s and was rebuilt in its present form by Truman’s Brewery in around 1930. Very much a down-market, high street, strictly ‘no real ale’ sort of place, it closed in early 2012 for refurbishment, and re-opened on 18 July 2012 as a real ale champion, complete with in-house ‘Howling Hops’ micro-brewery (subsequently relocated to larger premises). This pub is sister pub to the Southampton Arms in Kentish Town.

We have visited this pub 87 times, seen 323 different beers and tried 203 of them.
