The Queens Head (Gray & Sons)
Visits Details
20 Jun 2026 (Hogan Sampling)
2nd visit of this outing: Busy with a good few in the shade on the inside of this charming backstreet Victorian pub. Whilst a breeze on the outside rather too hot for man and beast in the direct sunshine so we sat at one of the many inside tables. Prompt, friendly service for this late afternoon visit.
| Chelmsford (also branded as Blueshack) - Death Cowboy | 4.70 | | 1st beer of this visit: Came with very good head and lasting lacing on this English Pale Ale from Brewery Fields in Great Baddow, near Chelmsford, Essex, and operating on historic brewing grounds near the former 18th-century Baddow Brewery and incorporated in October 2016. A dry hoppy first hit. A lightly fruited hoppiness rising from its US Simcoe, behind its pine, resin and earthy flavours with a punchy bitterness winning over, and US Citra, behind its citrus notes such as of grapefruit and lime and the odd mildly sweet tropical fruit. A gentle maltiness winning over and lingering from its base of traditional English floor-malted grains such as Maris Otter to aid its sweetness. Served in good nick with lasting head retention. |
| Mauldons - Yellowhammer | 3.40 | | 2nd beer of this visit: Good head and lasting lacing presented on this session-strength light golden-straw coloured English IPA from the market town of Sudbury, in Suffolk, north-west of Colchester, and where the brewery was founded in 1795. In December 1982 the independent family brewery was re-established. A very lightly fruited first hit with hints of citrusy lemon and zesty grapefruit. A dry hoppiness climbing with a fruity citrus prevailing from traditional English and new-age hops added at different stages of the boil to aid its citrus punch and crisp bitterness. A delicate malt sweetness rising from locally sourced Maris Otter malted barley grown on Mauldons' own Suffolk estate. A dry bitterness lingering. Served in fine fettle. |

Busy both on the inside and out, but in pleasant rear yard there was seating to be had. Timed right for instant service from barmaid.

| Hop Monster (Georges) - Mad Dog Black (was Mad Dog Mild) | 4.90 | | Great frothy head and full of maltiness in this fine mild. |
| Wantsum - Imperium | 4.00 | Not Tried | |

17:00 Very busy. Last day of beer festival, beers for which were in a shed at the rear of the pub. I stuck to the bar so didn't record what was on offer outside.

A good number of customers here mid-afternoon, including some rather boisterous pool players. Beer and breweries talk at the bar.
| Farmer's Ales (Maldon Brewing) - Dark Horse | 6.60 | | A chestnut-coloured, sweetish, strong ale – almost a barley wine I think. |
| Wibblers - Providence IPA | 3.60 | | I think this might be a house beer for this pub. Important to note that it is not an India Pale Ale, but an ‘East Anglia IPA’, which makes it a darkish, malty and slightly tangy bitter, rather than a pale hop-monster. |
| Oakham - JHB | 3.80 | Not Tried | |
| Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | Not Tried | |
