10 Sep 2013 (Stephen Harris)
Here for a local branch CAMRA meeting in the side room. 17 members present – not bad given the rival attraction of an England international on TV. Pub otherwise quiet. The pub frontage has been re-decorated, with prominent Wild Card Brewery signage, although the brewery is not yet active on site.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Wild Card - Jack of Clubs4.50ExcellentStill cuckoo-brewed at Brentwood. In great condition here. A dark, satisfying bitter.
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Runner4.00GoodGreat to taste the Hackney Wick-brewed Truman’s at last (and the brewery launch party is this coming Saturday). Dark, fruity and tangy as when contract-brewed at Everards, but we all thought it was a significant improvement and in a traditional style that remains very popular.
Greene King - IPA (was 3.6%)3.40Not Tried
14 Jun 2013 (Stephen Harris)
First ever beer festival at the pub, aimed primarily as an introduction to Wild Card Brewery, who hope to be brewing here soon. It has drawn beer drinkers from far and wide.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Five Points - First Brews No. 4 – Pale Ale4.40ExcellentSomething of a favourite at the present time, this is a full-bodied beer.
Wild Card - Jack of Clubs4.50GoodWild Card continue to brew this beer at Brentwood Brewery, but are hoping to move soon to their own location in Walthamstow. It is a dark copper-coloured, traditional bitter. Some caramel flavours.
Signature Brew - Unplugged4.80PoorSignature Brew continue to brew their beers at Titanic Brewery. This beer was cloudy and yeasty and was taken off sale – intended flavours hard to determine.

The pub is found in Walthamstow, Greater London, E17 5RG.

Pub present as the Higham Hill Tavern by 1869, when it was owned by the Wells & Perry Brewery of Chelmsford, later passing to the Smith Garrett Brewery of Bow and subsequently to Taylor Walker Brewery in 1928. By 1986 the pub had been renamed the Tavern on the Hill. It is best known in recent years for featuring in Sky TV’s 2004 programme ‘Britain’s Hardest Pubs’. This did not exactly enhance its reputation and in 2005 the pub was renamed the Warrant Officer, to reflect the landlord’s previous occupation. In 2013 it was set to become the home to Wild Card Brewery, but they eventually chose a larger premises on the other side of Walthamstow.

We have visited this pub twice, seen 13 different beers and tried 4 of them.
