Bit of a disaster here. I suggested an early evening meal for half a dozen of my cycling mates - but the restaurant was fully booked as Tom Jones was appearing live in Carlisle!? Beer ok - but no food and the landowner got grumpy when one of our group started eating a pizza in the outside area. We moved on - depriving him of at least a gallon of wet sales. Lancaster IPA at 4.2 from Lancaster Brewery was good.

Finished my 3 nights up north with a good morning’s cycle and then lunch and a pint outside the Aggi in sunshine. Perfect. Same 4 beers as yesterday.

Contemporaneous record. I’m staying at the Station Hotel opposite that has no real ale. Sitting outside with a good view of the castle ruins as the sun sets. I’ve gone for Oakhams rather than the local brews - good choice, very nice place. Chris will be please to know that the bar area has been preserved as promised.

My first visit here, the pub is covered in scaffolding and is undergoing a major refit. I am assured that the bar area, which is listed on Camra's inventory of pubs with regional historic interest will remain untouched, but the restaurant area will be refurbished and new carpets laid. Jennings insignia on the exterior will be removed. I paid two visits here today and had good friendly service by knowledgeable staff on each occasion.

Just time for a quick late-afternoon pint in here after being dropped at the station and before my train home. Seemed like a very pleasant pub.

The pub is found in Penrith, Cumbria, CA11 7JE.

Comfortable pub in Castlegate and close to the railway station and a short uphill walk from the town centre. The 'Aggi' (as it is known locally) has a friendly atmosphere and provides a good range of home cooked meals. The pub is just a claymore's throw from the ruins of Penrith Castle which are testimony to the turbulent history of the border counties and are worth a visit. Note the impressive rising shutters at the ornate wooden and glass bar counter area. Local CAMRA branch Pub of the Year for 2013. En-suite accommodation. 6 handpumps.

We have visited this pub 6 times, seen 16 different beers and tried 5 of them.
