My football match was an early kick-off today and I’m in the unusual situation of being in a pub on a Saturday afternoon – not my usual habitat at all. In my confusion I order a pizza at a time when the kitchen is quiet. The pizza is delicious, although at 4pm I’m not sure if it is a late lunch or an early dinner.

I’m here for the launch of four new collaboration beers, brewed to help celebrate the Five Points Brewery’s fifth anniversary. Disappointed to find that all four are on keg dispense. The pub is jammed.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Five Points - Blueberry Sour4.30ExcellentOn keg dispense. Brewed with Gipsy Hill Brewery. Purple in colour and well-carbonated. Sharply fruity and nicely tart.
Five Points - Belgian Wit5.00ExcellentOn keg dispense. Brewed with Burning Sky Brewery. A great Witbier. Lemony and zesty and spicy. Addition of pepper in the brew gives a good extra dimension.
Five Points - IPL6.50GoodOn keg dispense. Brewed with Magic Rock Brewery. A nice, hoppy Lager.
Five Points - Table Beer2.20AcceptableOn keg dispense. Brewed with Wiper & True. Amber in colour. Well-hopped, but thin and the taste over-dominated by the excessive carbonation.

I’m a bit early for an event at a pub nearby so pop in here to try Five Points’ new beer. I feel a bit foolish drinking a keg beer that I don’t greatly enjoy, when a couple of my favourite cask beers are on the bar.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Five Points - Juma5.50AcceptableFrom keg dispense. A disappointing, hazy gold IPA that lacks freshness. Dry, bitter and herbal.

It is again absolutely rammed in here in the early evening. Luckily some friends arrived very early and managed to bag a table.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Five Points - Brick Field Brown5.40ExcellentBrewed again to mark the passing of the seasons into autumn – and very good too.
Signature Brew - Absolutely No Worries6.50ExcellentFrom some form of keg. Pale dry and hoppy – a Brut IPA.

Early evening and the pub is very busy indeed, at least in part because there is a special feature this weekend of Green Hop beers. I’m stood at the bar with Terry L and Matt B.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Five Points - Green Hop Bullion3.70ExceptionalThe 2018 edition of this beer is fresh and pungent. The epitome to my mind of what a Green Hop beer should be.
Canopy - Leap Green Hop Pale Ale3.80GoodCloudy gold. Quite sharp.
East London (ELB) - Walthamstow Beer - Green Hopped Pale Ale4.40GoodA slightly rough beer with spicy Fuggles-type hops.
Hale Brewing - Belgo-Hop6.00GoodFrom a keg of some kind. An interesting interpretation of the Green Hop theme. Dry and a bit spicy.

Quiet in here after the crowds of last week. I was not the only one to compliment the manager on the very high quality of the cask beer. He said that a separation of keg beers and cask beers into separate temperature-controlled cellars had really paid off in improved quality for both types of beer, and that the cask beers were on particularly fine form.

Five Points - Railway Porter4.80ExceptionalA superb pint of chocolatey, black Porter. Is this the best regularly-brewed Porter in London?

This pub officially re-opens tonight, although it has been quietly open since last Friday. The Five Points have done a very nice job on smartening the interior and exterior. Every customer tonight gets a free pint and a free slice of pizza, but the place is uncomfortably over-crowded. I’ll come back for a proper look on a quieter evening.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Five Points - XPA4.00GoodNot quite as crisp as and maltier than I recall from previous experience.

Fuller's - Trans Atlantic Golden Ale (Fuller's & Friends collaboration with The Five Points) 4.60Not TriedThis beer is now believed to be brewed at Fullers.
03 Aug 2018 (Stephen Harris)
A bit of a coup for the Pembury as they have all four of the Fullers collaboration brews done for the London Craft Beer Festival here tonight in cask. Unfortunately, none of them are really ready for sale and all suffer from a lack of condition – a real shame as I am sure these are all great beers.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Fuller's - Steam Effort (Fuller's & Friends collaboration with Redemption)4.50GoodA collaboration brew with Fullers. Unfortunately it is in flat condition. The best of the bunch; a Steam Lager.
Five Points - Trans Atlantic Golden Ale4.60AcceptableA collaboration brew with Fullers. Unfortunately it is in very flat condition. Malty and strong.
Wiper and True - New English IPA 6.00AcceptableA collaboration brew with Fullers. Unfortunately it is in very flat condition. Strong, fruity and slightly sweet.
Anspach & Hobday - The V ‘n’ O Stout 5.50AcceptableA collaboration brew with Fullers. Unfortunately it is in very flat condition. Vanilla and oatmeal.

After last month’s Cask Festival, this weekend sees a ‘Keg Party’ – a bit uncool for this website, but I went anyway. It has been announced that the pub will close for refurbishment on 12 August.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Good Chemistry - Solar Impulse5.00ExcellentA golden APA. Very bitter, and fruity too.
East London (ELB) - Barbed Wit Rhubarb Wheat Beer4.60ExcellentFrom key-keg and quite a departure for ELB – this is an alcoholic fruit (rhubarb) smoothie.
Lough Gill - Sloe Gin Gose5.20ExcellentFrom keggery of some form. Hazy gold in colour. Sour, salty, gin botanicals, fruit. There is a lot to like here.
Black Iris - Liquid Flamingo3.00ExcellentFrom key-keg. Alarmingly pink in colour. It is a raspberry-flavoured Berliner Weisse, and rather lovely.
Donzoko - Session IPA 4.70GoodFrom keg. Yellow/gold murk. Fizziness detracts on this one. But there are lush, hoppy flavours.

There seemed to be major disruption on the roads so we got off the bus and as we walked to the park we came past the Pembury - so we popped in.

The pub is found in Hackney, Greater London, E8 1JH.

This pub was built in around 1866 and for many years was a Truman’s house. By the 1970s it was best known as a live music venue, with a large hall to the rear (which has now been converted to residential use). The pub was refurbished in 1983 and by 1986 had been acquired by Banks & Taylor Brewery. Closed for five and a half years from 1998, it re-opened but led a precipitous existence until acquired by Milton Brewery in 2006. In May 2018 the keys passed to the nearby Five Points Brewery. It is a large, stone and brick building on a busy junction near Hackney Downs and Central railway stations. The long wooden bar has 6 handpumps (down from 16 in Milton’s time). There is a bar billiards table, a pizza kitchen and a small outside seating area beside the road junction.

We have visited this pub 39 times, seen 174 different beers and tried 115 of them.
