Back again for another Saturday evening session having had such a good time last week. This time there is just three of us and we are lucky enough to get a table in the snug.

Busy as expected for an early evening with folk spilled out onto the pavement, standing room only inside. We shared a table which had a couple of seats free.

Pub number four on a friend's birthday outing. I treated myself to a salt beef sandwich. Food prices are very good here so it was no surprise to a good number of people eating. Toasted sandwiches start at £1.50 each. I forgot to make a note of all the beers available today.

Just after noon - start of an early birthday crawl with my daughter. Pub already busy with drinkers and a group of about 10 tourists being educated in the ways of English pubs and beers - now that's a job I could come out of retirement for! Noted that meals were incredibly cheap - £3.50 for ham, eggs and chips. Too early for us to eat though. A real gem of a pub.

Pre-curry pint. Always a pleasant welcome here.

Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Bow Bells4.20ExcellentStrong scent of oranges and lemons – should be called St Clement’s to better fit the rhyme. Pale gold in colour. Very citrus in flavour. It must I think contain orange or lemon zest or both – I doubt you could get such a level of citrus flavour from hops alone.

Not crowded in the early evening. The best seats by the fire were occupied by the pub cat, but I had the rare privilege of finding a table free in the snug.

A pre-curry pint. It is vinyl records night and busy, with some great old tracks being played.

Light rain has pushed everybody inside the pub, so it is rather crowded at around 8pm. I always enjoy my visits here.

Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Zephyr4.40ExcellentIt takes something special to keep me off the Brewers Gold in here, but I regard this heavily-hopped beer as Truman’s top of the range.

I arrive just as everybody in the pub is being given a plate of sausages and roast potatoes. I’m here to join a Truman’s Brewery history walk and eventually around 25 people assemble and head off towards the brewery buildings.

The pub is found in Spitalfields, Central London, E1 5LJ.

Down a side street off Brick Lane, this is a popular pub and one of the regular outlets for Crouch Vale beers from Essex including the award winning Brewers Gold. Central bar serves an L shaped room with lots of dark wood and red velour. Established before 1891, this pub was historically called the Romford Arms and was owned by Ind Coope and a reminder of these days survives in the form of a brewery mirror in the snug bar. The name change to Pride of Spitalfields came in the early 1980s. The pub survived an arson attack in the early 2000s.

We have visited this pub 21 times, seen 14 different beers and tried 9 of them.
