15:20 Back on the 'Spoons trail. Now down to eight of us. We got the stone round table at the rear and enjoyed a late lunch.

Fairly quiet on a Monday evening and a chance to enjoy the surroundings. My second Wetherspoon running with no Greene King products on the bar – what’s going on?
BeerABVScoreNotes
Green Jack - Waxwing3.90AcceptableA golden beer served with a chill-haze. Very fresh-tasting. An odd name for a beer available in mid-summer.

06 Oct 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Very busy with plenty of legal types in attendance.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Maxim - Andersons Best Scotch4.20GoodTypical eighty shilling style beer, dark brown in colour with a big malty kick. Little hop character and a dryish, fruity finish. My score 15/20.

Always liked this Spoons, it's big and airy.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hawkshead - Cumbrian Five Hop5.00ExcellentSuperb hops on this one.

A busy Thursday evening, full of office workers socialising before going home. I have not been able to list all the beers that were on offer as I could not get near enough to the bar to see all the pump clips.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Goose Island Honkers Ale4.20ExcellentBrewed by Greg Hall of the Goose Island Brewery Chicago, at Shepherd Neame's Brewery for Wetherspoon's Beer Festival. A well balanced fruity and malty beer.
Greene King - Abbot5.00Not Tried
Greene King - Ruddles Best3.70Not Tried
Marston's - Zululand Zulu Blonde4.50Not TriedAnother beer brewed for JDW's festival (which does not officially start for another seven days). This is from the Zululand Brewery of South Africa, but brewed at Marstons. Unfortunately I had to attend a lecture at the LSE so I did not have time to try one.

Confirms my opinion as my favourite 'Spoon in central London. Lovely building, 12 handpumps, no sparklers, good efficient staff.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Stone Brewing California Double IPA7.00ExcellentGreat condition, stunning dry hopped aroma.
Oakham - JHB3.80GoodVirtually the beer that started it all for me. Grat condition, a little soapy, a little ascetic, but it's still got the grapefruit/tangerine thing.
Holden's - Black Country Special Bitter5.10AcceptableAmber, disappearing beige head. Not great condition, bit syrupy on the malts, one I will re-rate in better condition if I can. A syrupy malty juicy beer, decent earthy tasty fuggles hops, some toffee. Could be good I think. Fuggles are nice, so is the residual grapefruit.

One of the better Wetherspoon's in London. Nice interior, better than usual clientele as well.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Grand Union - Special4.50GoodPale chestnut colour with lasting beige head. Looks in cracking condition. Crystal clear, lively head. Like all Grand Union beers, it's solid. I will miss this brewery when it goes in the next week or so. Not sure if anyone will buy the brand and recipes, but the brew kit is going up north to the Wirral apparently. Hoppy aroma with some toffee/candy sugar. Absolutely fine in mouth, good sherberty hop finish. Toffee/nutty, good balance of ingredients. Solid
Oakham - Inferno4.00GoodPale gold with thin white head. Trademark citrus hop aroma, not in best condition maybe. A little flat. But the insistent hop on the finish is impossible to ignore. Aroma and finish are excellent, malts are a little weak.
Wooden Hand - Black Pearl4.50PoorBlack with ruby edges, thick lasting beige head. Charcoal liquorice aroma. Thinnish in mouth. Just not in a porter/stout mood today. Dark Star/Oakhams win hands down. Just not my thing.

Fairly busy even though it was a Saturday and it is tucked down on Chancery Lane. Great architecture though.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Harviestoun - Ice Maiden4.20GoodSpicy hoppy beer, good biscuity hop.
Mighty Oak - Maldon Gold3.80AcceptableReally looking forward to this, but it wasn't at its best.

One of the better Wetherspoons in the capital. Very nice architecture.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Itchen Valley - Hambledon Bitter4.00GoodElderflower aroma. Lovely aroma actually. Really good bitterness on end. Good beer. Nice balance and good in mouth

Led Zeppelin fan gathering. Busy, yet no music. I rather like this pub, quite grandiose.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Harviestoun - Natural Blonde4.00GoodPale gold, thin lasting white head. Slightly thin and ascetic, golden bitter. I was hoping this would be best of the lot and it isn't. Yes, it has wheat, yes it has some harsh citrus hops. Good citrus beer, along the Harviestoun lines but lacks intensity and is a sub Oakham White Dwarf.

Architecturally a beautiful building in Chancery Lane. Main bar has high ceilings and large windows, corner pub and idiosyncratic toilets. Split level pub. Pillars and chandeliers are worth noting. Closed on Sundays. Closed by Wetherspoon 18th March 2023 at the end of its lease. Now taken over by Berkeley Inns with a new name and imminent re-opening in summer 2023.

We have visited this pub 10 times, seen 34 different beers and tried 15 of them.
