Sunday afternoon and just a scattering of customers in what is really a weekday commuters’ boozer.

Late evening and busy for a Thurs eve plus ridiculously and unnecessarily loud music forcing conversation to be avoided or shouting at each other.

Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Young's London Gold4.00GoodShame not enjoyed in a more pleasant environment. I did not bother listing the other beers on offer.

I was intrigued by Nick Willis’ report of guest beers in here and popped in after work for the first time in several years. Unfortunately the Black IPA had run out. The ground floor bar was quite busy.

My friend told me this was the place to go in the 80s for real ale when at Liverpool St. So we visited for old times sake on his behalf. I'd feared it would be Youngs beers only but was pleasantly surprised. Service wasn't great but that's because they were understaffed.

The pub is found in City, Central London, EC2M 4NR.

This pub was established in 1745 and for many years traded as Ye Old Port Wine Stores, before adopting the Dirty Dicks name in 1814 (or perhaps 1804). Dirty Dick (real name Nathaniel Bentley) had been a shopkeeper whose new bride died before the wedding feast could be eaten and who then vowed never to clean his house or himself from that day forward. The pub used to exhibit various artefacts acquired from Dirty Dick's Leadenhall property, including a mummified cat or two. It was rebuilt in 1870 and these days there is little reminder of the origin of the pub’s name, the various ‘artefacts’ having been disposed of in a 1985 refurbishment. Now owned by Young’s, there is a smallish ground floor bar mainly used for vertical drinking, with more comfortable bars on two other levels. Modern take on a wooden interior to give a relaxed atmosphere.

We have visited this pub 4 times, seen 10 different beers and tried 4 of them.
