Great to see a backstreet, wet-led pub so full of people on an early Wednesday evening.

I’m here for the East London & City CAMRA Cider Pub of the Year presentation, but only a couple of other people are as (not for the first time with ELAC) there has been a muddle over the dates. Still, it’s very nice out on the balcony at the back and I don’t feel obliged to drink cider.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Dark Star - Biscotti5.90GoodA dark beer with chocolate and nut flavours. Almost too sweet though.
Acorn - Dragon IPA5.00AcceptableSlovenian hops in a very soft, golden beer that lacks bitterness or bite.

This has been on my 'to do' list since hearing about the origins of how it came to be. Am glad I have and very impressed. Spot on atmosphere a proper locals pub.

Just time for a quick pint before catching a train from the nearby Hackney Central Station, I always find the homeless people camping under the railway arch between Morning Lane and Mehetabel Road to be a cheery lot. A great atmosphere in the pub tonight.

Afternoon visit and most enjoyable, we alternated between sitting in the patio area and inside in the bar area. Very good welcoming bar staff informed us that the pub will be celebrating its first birthday on 1 July with brews from a number of the new London Microbreweries including a cask ale from Pressure Drop.

Busy on Sunday late-afternoon and getting busier as people start to congregate for the Christmas Carols around the piano session.
BeerABVScoreNotes
First Chop Brewing Arm - ChiPA4.50ExcellentA full-flavoured, amber-coloured beer. Thought from the name that it might taste of tea – more like ginger though. Lovely anyway.

‘Soft launch’ tonight. But word has spread fast and there is a big crowd here, with much deserved congratulations for those who have brought the pub back to life.

The pub is found in Homerton, Greater London, E9 6DU.

A much-loved, mid-terrace, backstreet pub in Mehetabel Road, standing close to St John’s Church and Sutton House. Tragically the pub closed in 2012, having been acquired by the dreaded ‘developers’. But they reckoned without the dogged campaigning of a group of former regulars who first achieved recognition of the pub as an ‘Asset of Community Value’ and then a succession of legal victories which culminated in the pub re-opening in June 2015. It features a (so far) rather bare two-room interior, bare because all the former fittings had been stripped out, and a pleasant rear garden. In addition to its Asset of Community Value status, the pub was awarded CAMRA East London & City Branch Pub of the Year 2016 & Cider Pub of the Year 2018. SPBW London Pub of the Year 2017.

We have visited this pub 8 times, seen 26 different beers and tried 13 of them.
