The pub is found in Clapton, Greater London, E5 9RB.
This pub was present on the west side of Lea Bridge by the 1850s and possibly since the bridge was built in 1820. For a long time it was one of a little clutch of pubs here but is now the sole survivor. It was named the Prince of Wales, changing gender in around 1995 in honour of our most recent Princess of Wales. It was rebuilt in its current, enlarged form sometime after 1890 and retained a separate Public Bar into the 21st century. A succession of refurbishments have subsequently seen it slip into a single bar format. The pub has a popular canal-side decking area. Was one of a clutch of east London pubs leased by Whitbread to Young’s in the 1970s; the only one still with Young’s today.
