I got here 30 minutes before opening and was 8th in the queue as I know they don't have many tables in the main hall (5 or 6 small card tables). Having a proper seat really made a difference and I enjoyed meeting different people as they shared the table. UK beers were ok, but then I started on the German lagers.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Crouch Vale - Millennium Gold4.20ExcellentGold, bubbly white head. Lovely hoppy beer. So drinkable. Yes, it’s probably the best beer of the day so far. A bit like Brewer’s Gold, but more so. Flowery grassy hop. Gorgeous.
DarkTribe - Hop Over to Paris5.20ExcellentA blend at the brewery of Six Hop Ale and Hophead. Gold colour with lasting beige head. Grapefruit aroma hits you halfway across the table. Really, really lovely hop. Some malt on aroma. Great hoppy finish. Not perfect, something in the flavour in the mouth wasn’t quite right, but the hop is terrific.
Bottle Brook - Russian Imperial Stout8.00ExcellentBlack with thin beige head. Slightly choccy, some heat from alcohol. OK, that’s an impy stout. That woke me up from a mid afternoon lull. A little lacking in fullness in the mouth. Lots of beautiful dark choc on finish. Somewhat bitter, but not harsh. The dark choc on the finish is excellent. Settle down into a very subtle impy stout with an almost liquid 70% cocoa dark choc. This gets better as you drink it. Lovely.
Eastwood's - Gold Award4.40GoodDeep gold, bubbly ivory head. Some toffee, some leafy hop. Condition could be better, but the earthy nettley hop is excellent underpinned by juicy malts. Bit of tea maybe, but otherwise a very good best bitter. Some decent malts. Peppery leafy hop, very good best bitter.
Acorn - Madness4.40GoodGold, lasting off white head. Looks in good condition, yeast and citrus hop aroma, grassy. First beer of the day and a pretty good one. Biscuity malt, some farty yeast character, excellent condition and zippy. Rather pleasant, easy drinking. Hop zing has elderflower flavour.
B&T (Banks & Taylor's) - Shefford Old Strong (SOS)5.00AcceptableOld gold with disappearing head. Some malt, some syrup. Not great condition. It’s an ok strong ale, not huge flavours. Fine. Nice enough blend of malt and hop. Hop has some crystallised fruit. Drinkable without being flashy.
Pictish - Alchemists Ale4.30PoorPale gold, lasting bubbly white head. For me, it has diacetyl on the aroma. OK, after that. Decent citrusy hoppy golden beer, but the diacetyl spoils it for me.
Fox - Cerberus Norfolk Stout4.50PoorBlack with brown edges. Quite a choccy nose. OK in mouth, maybe a little tired, some condition. Not great. Just a little harsh for me, roasted grain. Some juiciness.
