An early afternoon visit when quiet. I had one of those experiences where you hand over a £20 note and get change from a tenner. When I pointed this out it was “Oh yes, of course you did” and the rest of the change was proffered. I spent the remainder of my time here wondering if I had been targeted for a rip-off or not.

The pub is found in Clerkenwell, Central London, EC1N 8QS.
An historic pub, established in 1751. It had a very long association with Watney’s Brewery. The pub was used by Charles Dickens when he lived not so far away and is said to be the model for the Three Cripples pub in Oliver Twist. Rebuilt in its present form in 1875, the frontage features a nice relief of a beer barrel. The interior is modernised, although much oak panelling remains. There are three handpumps on the bar.
We have visited this pub twice, seen 2 different beers and tried 1 of them.
