When people bemoan the loss in recent years of so many pubs in Whitechapel they often forget about this one. I’m guilty of that myself and it was a pleasure to make a first visit here in years. A rather dull beer range though.

The pub is found in Whitechapel, Greater London, E1 2AE.

This pub was first established in around 1785, shortly after the foundation of the London Hospital and its medical school nearby and its name is a nod towards that institution. It was rebuilt in its current form in 1937 and the building is instantly recognisable as the work of Truman’s architect A E Sewell, with some surviving Art Deco embellishments. A partition separating the pub into two bars was removed in the early 1980s. Some dodgy breweriana survives from the pub’s time as a T&J Bernard house. As it has presumably been from the very beginning, the pub is frequented by hospital staff and students and is nicknamed the Sammy. There are four handpumps on the bar.

We have visited this pub once, seen 4 different beers and tried 1 of them.
