Numbers swelled by the Thursday night mild drinkers, to be followed by quizgoers.

Harvey's - Knots of May Light Mild3.00ExcellentSweet and malty with delicate hop and yeasty flavours. Red/copper in colour, an excellent light mild. My score 16/20.

Surrey Hills - Hammer Mild3.80GoodDark brown mild with some roast malt to give a little bitterness. Some hop in the finish to give a flavoursome but slightly bitterer than usual mild. My score 15/20.

21 Dec 2008 (Dubbel)
Caught the tail end of the Winter Beer Festival and grabbed a bite to eat on Sunday lunch. Arrived shortly after opening, was quiet at first but gradually filled up as the afternoon wore on. Selection of six cask ales (usually 2 or 3 on in the week, maybe 4 at weekends). Relaxed, comfy interior. Owner Jamie is an excellent host, making a point of chatting to each customer and very interested in his beer.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Downton - Honey Porter4.40ExcellentFantastic. Easily the pick of the bunch, black with a fluffy white head, dark roasted porter malts with just the right amount of honey sweetness, served in perfect nick.
Hook Norton - Hooky Dark3.20GoodBrown mild, malty and easy-going.
Hop Back - Elf & Hoppiness3.90GoodMassively hoppy with some harsh bitterness offset by late detectable festive spices. An extreme beer but I liked it.
Wychwood - Winter's Troll4.80AcceptableNothing wrong with the conditioning here, this is just another dull, nondescript Marstons Pedigree-like beer.
Tirril - Old Faithful4.00PoorMuch lighter coloured than I remembered it, think I may have been served another beer by mistake. This was also a bit mature and would have benefited from a faster turnover.
Brentwood - Chestnut Stout3.90PoorLabelled as 3.999%, brewed with addition of chestnuts. This one seemed very tired with a hint of sulphur. Mine was the last half served before it was taken off.
