Very busy at late lunchtime on a Sunday – I had hardly room to squeeze into the standing area in front of the bar, before finding a stool to perch on. The latest in a line of refurbishments has meant that this pub is definitely no longer the ‘old fashioned boozer’ it could be described as as recently as 2009.

Nearest pub after Emirates skyline ride, lunchtime fairly quiet with about half a dozen customers.

2055 hours visit. No one drinking at the bar. Evening quiz in full swing. Rather mucky on the bar top with a large number of dead glasses all stacked - perhaps why drinkers shun drinking at the bar itself. No atmosphere.

In spite of the false advertising earlier in the week, the lure of one of the nation's finest porters was too much to bear. In the absence of Jimbo, Jnr and the OH, I headed down straight from work on my own and was very glad that I did. I sat out the front with the warm evening sun setting behind the gas tower, overlooking the Dome wondering whether you might be able to hear the concerts from there, savouring every sip.

Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Porter5.40ExceptionalMy God I love this beer! Optimum condition, having been on a day. Classical porter in every way from its dusky brown-black body and tan head to its spectacular deep, heavy bovril and dark choc malts, floral edge then lasting gravy finish. Another desert island cask.

After discovering that this was one of the Fuller's houses that would be stocking London Porter in celebration of National Cask Ale Week, I dragged the good lady down here for a reccy. We arrived and saw the POS promotion material confirming we were in the right place. However, after inquiring I was informed that the porter would not be put on until tomorrow. I was offered a pasturised bottled equivalent, which I moodily accepted. We sat in the illuminated back garden, complete with water feature which was very peaceful indeed and felt a million miles from London.
