Second stop of the evening. I've not been here for years. It's been done out very nicely. There's a spade on the wall covered with little shells. It's clearly a happenin' place.

This pub appeared closed when I passed this way about a year ago, but was in full swing this lunchtime with diners occupying tables on two floors and drinkers at the bar and in the rear garden. It seemed a likeable little place.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Ripple Steam - Original Best Bitter4.10GoodA good Best Bitter. Brown, with solid malt and nice, peppery, English hop tastes coming through. In great condition.

Unfortunately Enterprise Inns has bought this pub and it has changed quite a bit and not for the better. We were the only people in and when we saw the beer lineup we decided to just stay for a half. Shame as I loved this place a couple of years back.

Fifth pub visited this afternoon, and the best of the bunch. Very impressive ale range and even more impressed with the Foreign beers available. Time pressing, but this place certainly needs another visit for a proper session. Top marks. Recommended.

First time I've been here and I really liked it (everything except the prices that is). Like a clash between a pub and a bistro/diner. Great beer and an eclectic mix of people, the food looked really good as well.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hop Back - GFB (Or Gilbert's First Brew) (superseded by 3.5% version from about 2010)3.80GoodBadge has this down at 3.5%. Light hoppy beer, really quite good I thought.

Oops, I planned to get lunch here, but the Hophead at the Ship was so good, that I missed it. Not a problem as there are 3 beers on tap here I like, Bernard pilsner from Czech Republic, Budvar light and dark and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Oh and 4 UK cask.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Goacher's - Silver Star4.20AcceptableServed slightly warm. Not quite at it's best, bit of lager puke malt on aroma which was odd. Hop finish is stunning though.
Northumberland - Angel of the North4.30UndrinkableTook it back after 2 sips and they took it off sale.

I did have a few more pubs on my list to visit, but as soon as I got here, that was it for the afternoon. Clearly the best pub in Deal for the beer selection, both UK and world beers. OK, so it is a bit more of a bistro/bar than a traditional pub, but they have extended the handpumps to 7 and have good beers on tap and in bottle from Belgium, Germany and elsewhere. I had 4 different beers from the Hirt Brauerai from Austria.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Adnams - Yuletide4.50ExcellentRuby/dark brown colour with lasting beige head. An odd mix of a traditional malty winter warmer and a spicy peppery beer. Great condition. Actually I really like this. Proper spicy winter beer. Soft in mouth. Good dry malts.
Cottage - Wessex Warmer4.60GoodGold, with thin lasting off white head. Some earthy hop on aroma. May not have settled entirely. Some UK and USA hops on end I think giving an earthy sherberty effect. Quite a nice beer, but not very wintery.

Early lunchtime crowd. It really has a great location overlooking the sea and the pier with a protected rear decked patio and garden. Interior has modern bar feel with lots of wood and brown leather sofas and newspapers. Normally 3 UK beers on plus selection of draught continental lagers/beers (Amstel, Bitburger, Leffe blond and brune, Hoegaarden, Liefmans Kriek, De Koninck, white and dark Erdinger, Paulaner and Staropramen) and selection of bottled beers from around the world. One of my favourite places to come for its selection of beer.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Erdinger - Dunkel5.00ExceptionalOne of the reasons I came here today was because this is the closest place to Ashford that I know does this on draught on a regular basis. Dark wheat beer with chocolate malt and lemon acids with good lemon zingy finish. One of my favourite drinks in the world
Liefmans - Kriek6.50ExceptionalThis is even better on draught than it is in bottles. The flavours seem to be more pronounced and crisper. Gorgeous, wonderful, superb. Reddish, pinky, brown with pink head. Sour cherry and malt aroma. Body is full with dry sour balanced finish with more chewy cherries. Stunning
Woodforde's - Wherry3.80ExcellentNot quite at its most sparkling best. Pale copper colour. Good hop, malt nose with zingy hips and citrus in mouth.
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA3.80GoodPale gold in colour with bubbly white head, grapefruit citrus and fresh hop aromas. Pale malt undrpins more aggressive green hop flavours in the mouth leading to good hoppy, citric dry finish. Distinctive tea flavours too.
