The Marine used to be a destination pub - a friendly welcome and six interesting and usually pristine cask beers. You are reminded of this by the impressive array of CAMRA POTY certificates and pump clips that adorn the walls. Then you notice that the last CAMRA award was in 2013 and think that now there's, at best, three usually nondescript beers of highly variable quality served by staff for whom hospitality isn't a vocation. The harbour wall, on a sunny evening, is still a major pull but what a shame that The Marine's great days are now a distant memory.

Early evening and surprising busy. Staff do find it difficult to raise a smile.

I'd pretty much given up The Marine as a destination pub. Too many nondescript beers with the odd one served in questionable condition. Then the Verdant turned up and on cask!
BeerABVScoreNotes
Verdant - Lamanva Best Bitter4.00ExceptionalI have had more than enough ill defined hazy, juicy bangers or stouts that taste of anything but stout. Then this came along. It's good to see our more adventurous brewers revisiting our brewing heritage and this was a classic Best Bitter. Prefectly served with a lasting head this was symphony of British hops and malt. If all cask reached these heights it wouldn't be in terminal decline. Might have to go back tonight.
Harviestoun - Schiehallion4.80Not Tried
02 May 2024 (McGargle)
Very quiet on a sunny May evening. Could beer at £4.60 a pint, up from £3.40 at the turn of the year, be part of the reason?
BeerABVScoreNotes
Orkney (Sinclair) - Island Life3.70AcceptableCrystal clear session IPA , whatever that is.
